Default 2001 swing away or slide tongue

If anyone has an idea as to why someone would weld a tongue on a 2001 trailmanor, please respond.
We have found a used 2001 trailer that looks like it is in very good condition. We are going to see it this weekend. The owner says the previous owner welded the tongue (which is a slide, instead of a swing around) so we are not able to slide the tongue back to fit in a garage. Does anyone know why this would have been done? What is the purpose? Also this unit has an air conditioner inside the unit, (beside the stove) which looks like a vent of some kind, but is actually like a window unit. Has anyone experienced this kind of air conditioning? We are excited to have found something, that we think will work for us, and if not will keep checking this site. You all have been very helpful with ideas, and knowledge of trailmanors. Thanks

Earlier model TMs had A/C mounted in the cabinet next to the stove. I think it was only the smaller versions (2619 and 2720) and it seems like 2003 was when they moved the AC to the top. Larger models (3023, 3124, 3326) had A/C on top - but they moved it from the rear shell to the front shell in 2003. At least is what I've picked up from the forum and looking at models myself. Others can chime in with thier experiences.

There is a thread somewhere that documents replacing the A/C with a standard window unit.

As for the tongue, the only thing I can think of is that the owner did not like a movable tongue and decided to make it permanent.

Good luck. Let us know the results of your viewing.

I have a 2001 2720SL, but did not know about the slide option on the tongue for this year model. Someone must have added it to the model you are looking at. As far as the AC is concerned, many people don't like the side unit, they say it is not as effective as the roof AC. We have never had any problems with ours. The only thing we have encountered is that the front seems to stay cooler than the rear, so we have a small fan that moves the air around better.
I does a great job so far for us....

I've never heard of a slide tongue. In fact, I'm not sure that even the swing tongue was available on the 2001 models. The brochures (found on the Wayback Machine) for the 2001 models don't mention either one. As others have commented above, it may be something that an earlier owner added, and the next owner didn't care for.

It is possible (but probably not cheap) to add a swing tongue. We have had two or three threads about it in the past couple years.

Default perhaps this could be called a slide tongue

I saw an older TM in Tennessee that could be made shorter, but it did not have a swing-away tongue. Its owner had purchased it used, and it was like that when he bought it.

Instead of being triangular, the tongue was trapezoidal, with a flat surface closest to the TV and parallel to its bumper. This flat surface had a 2x2 inch receiver in it. A 2x2 inch bar with a coupler on one end was pinned into the TM's receiver and was removable.
