Default How does the metal cover over the back bumper cabinet attach?

Howdy folks -

I have just been getting my 2720SL up to par being a new purchase, and noticed that the metal cover that goes over the cabinet near the back bumper doesn't attach very well. It seems like it is a little too deep, as it overlaps the bumper by about an inch or two. There is a cheap fix -- someone screwed a wood screw through a metal brack into the back bumper, and that jump flips over the cover to keep it from bouncing up. This can't be a factory job.

Any idea how is it supposed to attach? Photos are attached.

Thanks!

Dave

We are getting ready to attend (May 4 - 5) the New England Pilgrim Chapter of TrailBlazers spring rally in North Stonington, CT (http://www.koa.com/where/ct/07119/). Our TM is open which allowed me to take a few photos of the rear bumper cover. As Leon stated, the fastener is the same as the one that secures the upper door section when the TM is closed down.

Here's the link to the two photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/commodor47/BackBumperCover#

Ditto what Leon and Dick said. That metal hold-on piece on your TM is not what comes from the factory. The original small white plastic retainer(s) must have been lost at some point. I would think the factory could supply you with a few of these, though I'm not sure the newer TM's use the same bumper storage system (??).

You can buy those plastic retainers at most hardware stores and RV stores. The cover is supposed to go on top of the piece of metal you can see in the middle of your first picture. It will fit better that way and, on mine, will go in a little farther. Incidentally, it's supposed to have two of the plastic turn buttons. Kind of "hokey" in my opinion, but I haven't gotten around to changing them yet.

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. It is much appreciated! I'm going to get some clips of some sort to put back on the bumper.

They still use the plastic retainers at the factory because when I visited it in January, I noticed they were on the '07s. They noticed one was broken on my '02 and replaced it. They even gave me one or two extras in a plastic bag. They liked seeing a TM with a lot of useage (over 20,000 miles). They get to see how things hold up over time.
