Propane Tank Valves and Certification
We own a 2005 2720. I took one of our horizontal tanks in to be re-certified, and have been waiting 3 1/2 weeks. Ferrellgas says they are trying to find a valve, but are having no luck. I've looked through the threads on older horizontal tanks, and I'm not sure where we are with them; many of the threads are quite old. Do horizontal tanks need to be re-certified? What is the issue with this type of valve? If I need a new valve, anyone know where we can get a pair? I also have an e-mail in to Manchester Tank, who is trying to assist with this as well.
Basically, H - E - L - P. Thanks.

Yes, even horizontal tanks need recertification. Horizontal tanks are not as common as vertical tanks, and do require different valves. It's my guess the company that is doing your recertification doesn't keep these valves in stock.
I would phone around and find out who can recertify then and has valves and parts in stock. Then, get your tank back from the first guy and take it elsewhere.
I had a horizontal tank recertified. I think it took 2 days because it was over a weekend.

Thanks, Larry. Manchester Tank tells me any horizontal tank made after 2000 does need to be re-certified. They have not gotten back to me yet about locating valves. I'm going to try and locate another facility. Still need to try and find valves, though.

I think they meant "not yet". My horizontal tanks need recertifying every 5 years. I guess you will find out in November 2020 on a trip to Alaska where they will refuse to fill it while it is 40 below and they won't have new valves in stock for another 6 months. (forgive me for my sense of humor... but I would get a second local opinion.)

The certification on your tanks is still valid, that's why you haven't had any trouble refilling yet. As I said before, in November of 2020 you will likely have to recertify. There should be a date stamp on the tanks somewhere indicating the certification date. The guys who refill your tanks quietly look for that date and see that they have a valid certification.

The maker of the horizontal tanks (Manchester Tanks) indicates all tanks made after the year 2000 do have to be re-certified. I have to go back and ask them how often.

Larry, does this mean they can go 15 years before recertification? I thought I had read somewhere that it was ten years?
Mine are about nine yrs old right now, so this is a definite item I want to be on top of....

Just did a quick google search and it appears they are good for 12 years from date of manufacture.
Recertification gives you another five years.
