Default Tub/Shower Faucet

My tub/shower faucet leaks below where the the female shower hose screws into the male stem coming out of the top of the faucet. I took the faucet apart and when examining it, it looks like I am missing a O ring or something.
Does the stem just screw into the top of the faucet without an O ring and just teflon tape?
I have read the treads in plumbing and really don't want to have to replace the faucet unless I have to. I don't see any cracks in any of the plastic faucet parts.
This picture was taken after I put the faucet back together and hoped the leak was fixed. Sorry the picture is not clearer.

The fitting is 1/8" pipe thread. No o'ring, just teflon tape. The one in my TM was plastic and it cracked. I was camping at the time so I just went to a H/W store and purchased a brass 1/8" pipe nipple with a 1/4" barbed hose fitting on the other side. I cut the shower hose and put it on the barbed fitting with a S/S mini-clamp.

I was going to order the original fitting when I got home........that was about 2 years ago.....
