towing question

I am considering the purchase of a Model 2720 SL. Weight is 2,865 lbs, tongue 392 lbs. Approx load capacity is 1,210. It's a single axle.

I want to pull it with my 4-wheel drive, Toyota 4-Runner SR5 with tow package. It has a V-6 engine, tow chart says 5,000 pounds.

Is this feasible? Safe?

A 2720SL DRY WEIGHT is 2865. In ready-to-camp condition (after you added factory options plus all our own "stuff") it weighs considerably more. Figure about 4000 pounds. A 5000 pound tow vehicle rating says you are probably good, with only a few caveats.

You would do well to search through the Towing Rigs forum - there is lots of good info for your vehicle.

I have a 2008 2720sl and have many options on it including AC. With all of our personel items both LP tanks full and no water its weight is 3,580 pounds. I hope our own weight number helps. Check the weight on your trailer as you add things so you know the weight of your trailer. Good luck Robert

I suggest taking your trailer to the scales. Guessing and using other people's #s is not helpful. However, if you have a 5K# tow rating and don't load your TV up, you should be OK (with a WDH).

Ditto what Wayne says about not loading your tow vehicle up and the necessity of a weight distributing hitch.

A tow vehicle that has a tow capacity of 5000# (or 6500# like mine) may not have much payload capacity. Mine is only about 1100#. And the trailer's tongue weight (which is pretty high for Trailmanors) can really eat into your TV's payload capacity. The WDH should help there, putting some weight back on the trailer's axle and some forward on your TV's front axle. This also reduces the load on your TV's rear axle so you don't exceed its GAWR, and definitely improves handling.

A vehicle's Tow Capacity is really about getting your trailer up to speed and up those mountains. It assumes your trailer will stop itself, so make sure your trailer brakes (both of them!) and brake controller are working properly.

I doubt that many people load a 2720 up beyond the 4,100 pounds I tow.

I suggest that for a 2720, using 4,100 as a worst case scenario is adequate.

Most people will be lighter than that.

I'm not so sure about that. I'm between 4000-4,100 lbs, and I never considered myself as heavy as a packer as what I envision you being based on your posts. Out of the ordinary, I have 2 batteries, a 25 lb plumbing guard, a spare 5-lb propane tank with brackets (maybe 30 lbs total). The rest was just water (full fresh tank, toilet, and water heater), full propane tanks, food, clothes, camp chairs, and who knows what else.

I am right there too Dave with my 2720 so I think the 4100 number is a good one for folks who tow full of water.

I'm like you. The only thing I would add is that it is not possible to put more stuff in the TM, because the tub, bathroom floor and main floor are already full.

I could load the TM with heavier stuff, but not more stuff.

The really heavy stuff is in the 3/4 ton truck. If we only take one ATV, then that is 800 pounds in the truck. If we take more than just the one dual seater ATV, then we take a second truck towing an ATV trailer.

I wish TM made a folding toy hauler, but I think that is not possible.
