Members are weighing the pros and cons of switching to a tankless on-demand water heater in their travel trailers. Some who have installed a direct replacement tankless unit report satisfaction, especially when the installation coincided with major plumbing updates and when camping with full hookups, as it provides virtually unlimited hot water. However, others argue that tankless systems offer little benefit for RVers who primarily boondock or need to conserve water, since frequent starting...

Hello.

Has anyone switched to a tankless on demand water heater in their TM?

If yes, what has been your experience? Is it worth doing?

Thanks!

I used the original manufacturers direct replacement unit tankless and we are happy with it. I had the trailer gutted, the sink removed and all of the plumbing out so it was easy. The original plumbing didn't line up for the original water heater and was cross threaded on so the decision to replace the plumbing was pretty easy. The propane connection being in the same place was helpful.

All of this was done before we ever went camping in our 2005 2720 so I don't have any comparison to using the original water heater.

I have argued with myself about doing this upgrade and have come to the conclusion that a tankless would not be beneficial.

No experience with tankless but have read a good deal about them. An RV inspector on YouTube commented that trailer manufacturers are acting like they are an upgrade when in fact they cost less. IMHO, tankless doesn't make sense in a trailer where water use has to be very limited, which means constantly starting and stopping the flow of water.

We don't operate the water heater in a start/stop manner. My wife uses a collapsible dish pan for dishes and washing up is done in one go. I thought about this quite a bit and have come down on the side of the tankless using just about the same amount of water as the tank but we don't have to wait for hot water. Also, if we are hooked up in a campground and can be casual about water use we have a virtually unlimited supply of hot water. Boondocking, I would say it doesn't matter too much which way you go but if you use campgrounds with sewer hookup I would give the edge to tankless. We boondock mostly so the benefits of tankless are meh.

My son and I don’t use the TM shower because we are too tall. We use the campground showerhouse, wife just followed suit. I always told her if she wants to use the TM shower I’d install a tankless water heater. This was like the only time she turned down spending money.

A tankless water heater really only benefits you if you like long hot showers and camp with full hookups. Otherwise the freshwater tank and the gray tank become limiting factors.
