Please explain what DW and DH stand for!

I've included this question in several recent posts, but so far no one has picked up on it or felt it important enough to answer.

My wife and I have tried to figure out the "DW" everyone seems to use to
refer to the wife.....but we can only come up with funny (for me - - not for my wife) solutions of a derogatory nature. I'm sure you already know what they might be.

So please, - someone, be so kind as to let us know so we both can
say, "Oh of course! Why didn't we think of that?"
