Anyone else notice today that this forum page was missing? My browser pulled up a bogus ad site instead of TMO. I checked with godaddy.com and saw that the domain name had expired today. Geez, I thought, right after I get my TM and am needing TMO daily! Nice relief to see it back and going strong. Hopefully the WA didn't get any skunk mail!

Strange?? I never had a problem logging onto the forum yesterday, and I did so a few times yesterday, just to see what going on. I know from reading emails received from the 'other forum', that many people were indeed being redirected to another site when they tried accessing the TMO forum. If the TMO domain registration had expired, I'm not sure why I didn't have the same experience?? I use the 'Safari' browser on a Mac, but I don't see why that would make any difference.

I spoke with Chris on the phone as soon as it happened. My understanding (and I'm not a guru) is this. Apparently the site name (aka the Domain Name, TrailManorOwners.com) is permanently ours, so it can't expire. But it has to be re-registered with all the domain name servers (DNSs, the computers that all ISPs use to find the servers for every site on the Internet) every year. The web site hosting company is supposed to do that, and should do it a few days early to make sure that all the DNSs pick it up in time. Unfortunately, the hosting company didn't do it until the last moment, so some DNSs got behind.

For the ISP that Chris uses for his web connection, the DNS re-registration was virtually instantaneous, and he never saw a problem. I use RoadRunner, and the DNS that they use didn't get the job done for more than 12 hours. The site appeared to be out for most of yesterday and on into the night. So the differences that we all experienced were simply a matter of which DNS your particular ISP uses. I hope we are all back now!

Chris had planned to change companies anyway - and is now doing so.

So the DNS replication cycle can happen slowly sometimes as it did yesterday. the company that we used to use for our website hosting may have waited until the last minute for renewal, and therefore we got cycled. I buy the domain name for two years at a stretch and buy (now again) the hosting space for a year at a time. I will not kill the website for any reason. I committed this years ago to all of you, and do it again now. I will not let the TMO site go down for any reason - so if it's down, there's a technical reason for it. I'm as committed to this site as I was almost 10 years ago when I started it. I'm still as happy that TM's are on the planet. It's my committment to all of you.

We have the best forum on the planet. Everyone who visits other sites agrees. If for some reason I decide to step down, I'll hand the torch off to someone else. I don't see that happening!

I hope I didn't offend you for starting the thread about the TMO outage. I certainly didn't intend to. Hope you didn't take it that way! What you do for the TM community is very respectable and I know you are sincere in keeping the flow going. The TMOF has been amazing the past couple months for me. My wife now calls me a TMOF "junkie". I really enjoy reading the posts and have found answers to many questions I have about our new TM. I look forward to meeting fellows TMOFers as we travel. I can say I've never been part of a more friendly, helpful forum!

I know where Chris is coming from. I own a small stable of domain names from prior ventures. The domain registrar companies have this annoying habit of starting to send you reminder emails as much as 6 months before your current domain expires. No way would I pay them that far in advance, so it becomes a game of "crying wolf" - they send, you ignore, etc.

Finally, you get a panicky email that if you don't renew NOW your domain will expire. So you renew, they drag their feet and.... well, you see what can happen.

I don't think I even realized how much time I spend on this forum until I couldn't get on it yesterday.

Glad to see that it wasn't me and my AOL that messed things up. I was concerned there for awhile.
