geo caching

Any members do any geo caching while traveling around the country?
I have done some near home, but thought it might be fun to try it while camping at various places.

A number of forum members are cachers, and the TM makes a wonderful base camp for the activity. My wife and I have cached for a number of years, and have found caches in all 48 CONUS states. We enjoy it primarily because it prods us to go places we would never have visited otherwise. Parks, mountains, old mining camps, ghost towns - all lure us in with geocaches. Anybody been to Luckenbach, Texas? What a fun place. We know the song, but would never have visited without the caches.

Anyway, first thing to do is go to geocaching.com and become a member. Basic membership is free. After that, what can I tell you?

Bill, I've been a member for about 15 years. I haven't looked for any caches in a long time. I thought I might get started again while enjoying the TM. I need to stock up on some trinkets I guess.

As a premium member I run a route query or do search around the CG we are planning to stay at. At the moment I'm behind in logging about three earthcaches from the last two camp grounds.

Many parks have multiple caches. They are either placed by the park or by individuals encouraged by the park. We offer classes in caching and use the caches at our park all the time. The park caches usually feature specific highlights of the park. I have three in our park and they are very active during the season.

Geo-caching is both fun and frustrasting.

I've been Geo-caching since Nov 2008. Just got a 15 year anniversary souvenir on May 2, 2015.
That date marks the beginning of geocaching.com and when the Fed's opened up the satellites
to allow everyone to enjoy the increased accuracy of civilian GPS devices.
This hobby is both fun and frustrating. I hate DNF's, mine or anybody elses.
I enjoy using the technology but hate the extreme challenges of terrain 5 and difficulty 5 caches.
Why bother? Or the cache owners who deliberately post GPS coordinates 20-30 feet off just to be
sure you'll go around in circles looking for the cache. That's just plain mean.
We picked up a couple caches while in Florida in April. Also, since we live in Georgia, we've
started the Georgia State Parts Geo-Tour of 42 parks. We started this Geo-Tour before buying the TM.
One of the reasons we bought the TM was so we could go to a park campground for a long weekend
and geo-cache the area too.
Until last October, we had just logged a geo-cache at the state park then
stepped into the Park Rangers office just to visit. The ranger said; " there's a nice trail
across the road that will you take to 3 waterfalls". We decided to try it. 1.25 miles up
the trail and just passed the first waterfall, the DW slips on a wet rock and breaks her left fibula.
And she walked out!!!??? Needless to say, I had to close up the TM and ended our camping trip early.
We haven't been to a GA SP since. She insists on level ground now. Not wanting a repeat of the hiking
trail of last October.
We're just getting old, I guess.
