Fire Marshal Inspection

The state I live in (Kentucky) requires a fire marshal inspection before the unit can be licensed, if the unit was purchased out of state. My new 2005 3124KS was inspected today. The inspector was very concerned that the cook stove was not vented and also the emergency exit was not a window. He said it would take too long to get out pulling the bed back and exiting. He plans on taking these concerns up with Trail Manor soon. Has anyone out there had any concerns about these two items? The fire marshal passed my unit so I could license it, but was reluctant to do so. If Trail Manor has any comments, they can e-mail me at [email protected]. Happy Camping

1. Tell him to get in the bed with the pin out. When it dumps his fanny on the ground he will change his mind about the time it takes.

2. Ask him if any of the other trailers, like Coleman of which there are about a jillion, have vent-a-hoods over the cook-tops. Where has he been living? in the hills?

There is no room to install vent hood for the cook stove. However, most of the TMs since about 2002 have a power vent installed in the roof over the stove. I would think that this would suffice for a stove vent.

It would take to long to pull the bed back and exit. You don't pull the bed back. You unlatch the safety catch and lift/tilt the front edge of the bed to exit - takes about 5 seconds. I have never seen a statement that a safety exit had to be a window.

Sounds like you ran into one of those officials who are trying to make a name for themselves and/or advance up the political ladder.

Since new TMs are sold in your state, I would think that both of these issues have been reviewed by the state fire marshals office.

As far as I know, Mike is correct about the bed/exit. And it brings up a question. For as long as I have owned a TM, people have said that the bed will fall down outside the camper if you don't engage the pin. But neither of my TM's have worked that way. In fact, the bed CAN'T drop, because the braces, outside the camper, are below it.

In both of my TM's, the bed/exit works as Mike said - you lift the front edge of the bed and go out under it. When engaged, the pin prevents the bed from being lifted, presumably as a "lock" to keep intruders out. I personally have never engaged the pin. In fact, I have removed it, along with the pins that lock the front slider in place. They seemed to serve no useful purpose, and were often in the way, or caught on something.

So what's the story? Is this a model-specific, or age-specific thing? Does anyone have a TM in which the bed will actually fall out if the pin is not engaged? I'm not sure I'd be comfortable trusting the weight of my wife and myself to that dinky little pin, or the little block of wood it plugs into.

I agree with you Bill, all the latchs seem to be useless. And the bed can not fall out. I have a 2001 2720SD and will be removing the latchs shortly. The only thing I thought of is the latch on the bed (sort of) stabalizes the bath room wall. ???

Here is a little trick to try (saw it happen to a guy at a rally). Open the trailer, pull the bed out - part way (I would guess) - and get on it, moving as far to the back as you can get. He and the bed fell out. Needless to say he was not a happy camper, I never saw him at another rally.
