That A/C interior frame helps to separate the interior 'air intake' (closer to the middle) from the 'output' colder air, directed forward and backwards at the ends. The intake contains a pair of basic washable filters, which can be cleaned a bit when they get dirty. They can be upgraded a bit to catch more airborne dirt, but use replacement media with large holes, or you'll cut the air flow down too much. (Definitely plastic with only slightly smaller gaps, NOT upgrading to any sort of paper).
They tend to be very expensive. Instead of buying a replacement, could you maybe tape the broken parts of the one you have now? (I'd use aluminum foil tape on the back side, because it's stronger than the plastic '181-B' duct tape products, and totally unaffected by water drips on the aluminum surface.) Are the controls OK?
