Catalytic Converter thieves

I have been seeing several articles in our automobile trade journals about the rise in catalytic converter thefts from mostly SUV's and larger motorhomes. The catalytic converter has some expensive components internally.

I went ahead and did an internet search and there is plenty of articles out there about it. Just letting everyone know, so you might can figure out how to protect yourselves...........or at least not be shocked like I would if it happens to you.

It would be something to arrive back at your campsite and found out someone has stolen your converter from your vehicle.

My neighbor and good friend just had her converter stolen a few days ago. The car was parked in her driveway, and it was done at night, presumably some time after she pulled in about 7pm, as it would be hot for awhile. Three bolts on the ground, and no sign of the converter. The cops said it is becoming more and more common around here, particularly in parking structures. They usually run in pairs, carry a battery operated sawzall, and can be in and out in 1 minute. They go for $50-$100 at the local scrap yard, but you do have to show "ID" before they pay.

Thank you!

Thanks for the heads up. Who would have thought?????:new_shock

The skyrocketing costs of raw materials has made for some interesting criminal opportunities.

Just saw on the news that thieves are stealing the valve on top of fire hydrants...not sure how they do that without opening the hydrant, but since it's about 6 lbs of brass, they get about $6 for it at the recycling center. Costs about $150 to replace.

They also open access panels at the base of 2 adjacent street lights, and rip out the copper wire that link the 2 together. That goes to the scrap yard as well for a few bucks. Amazing what people are willing to risk for literally a few bucks.
