Totally agree re the state based firewall. I guess I don't think about that too much because I use a Mac and OSX has one "on" by default. That said, the advice about watching what network you're connected to is a good one. When you go a campground, make sure you get the specific network name and log on information from the front desk.

I always worry about hand held devices that work on wi-fi as well as subscription based cellular data since those devices will log onto just about any unencumbered network.

The message...."you always have to be careful".

I agree, I will only use handheld on a very few public networks and only for a short period... However, I have always seen the option to select the network since I purchased my first 802.11 card in 2001 for my pda... maybe the integrated ones are different, haven't gotten new one in while--opted for an Itouch as my truck has "sync" and I can plug it in through USB and control it by voice, am using it as pda...

I might offer a suggestion here to anyone that is going to be traveling outside the US. Contact your credit card company and let them know the dates and countries where you will be traveling. We discovered this a few years ago when in Beijing and after our first $50 withdrawal found our credit card was locked. We had to borrow money from our fellow travelers until we got back home.

Depending upon what, if any cellphone you have, many are now able to create their own wifi hotspot. This would allow you to maintain your own network. You do need to be fairly close to the phone to sync. One other note is to check your contracts TOS (terms of service) to see if this is allowed. nick
