We have a 2007 2027 TM that we purchased in 2010. Never replaced the anode rod. Used the TM annually for a week or two and always drained the hot water tank after the trips. At end of season took the anode rod out. It still looks good. My question about the rod is as follows. The last 4 years its become more difficult to start screwing the anode rod into the water heater. Could it be due to age? Though it still works well is it time to change it out? Thanks
John

The threads are likely just becoming a bit rusted or otherwise gunked up. You can simply clean them up using a 3/4"-14 tap, like this one for ~$13:

Drive it in with a socket.

It wouldn't hurt to take a wire brush to the threads of the rod at the same time. The thing to avoid is the use of any lubricant. If oil gets into your water, the taste will last forever.

Bill, I read your winterizing post (thanks by the way) and I’m currently doing that unfortunately. Should the anode rod be removed for winterizing as well? I know you said there’s no need to mess with the heater, but I’ve seen some people remove them during the winterizing process.

Removing the anode rod is not a necessary part of winterizing, but it is a handy time to remove it and check it. Some folks remove the rod thinking it is a way to drain the water heater, but that really isn't necessary since the tank drains through one of the for under-floor drains.
