2720 vs 3124

I've been thinking of getting a 2720 QB in the coming year. However, having not seen one yet, and my wife not having had any camping experience, I'm wondering if there are any opinions of the 2720 vs the 3124. For me the over length of the 2720 is an advantage for storage. If I got one with a swing hitch it will just barely fit in my garage. The 3124 would have to be stored in the front driveway.

However, there may be features of the 3124 that my wife and kids may appreciate that may very well outweigh the advantages of the 2720. I'm curious what those may be.

In my mind, something to consider is the 2720 has the queen bed, which sleeps sideways. Whomever is at the far end of the trailer must crawl over the other sleeper to get up, whether in the middle of the night, or in the morning.

If you are both under 5' or build a passage extension you can sleep longways in a 2720.

How many kids? How old? Will they sleep together?

Bill

One boy, one girl, preteens, but we wouldn't be getting rid of the trailer for a long time. If we have the two double beds, I'd probably sleep with my son, my wife with my daughter. Sometimes we may wish to take along another friend.

Originally I was only considering the QB model, but I'm thinking the QD or KD models may be more flexible. It would mean setting up the bed each time at night, but it would give more moving around space during the day. On the other hand, my wife is used to using every horizontal surface possible, which would make setting up at night more hassle.

I know, ultimately, I'd have to get my wife to look at one of these. Also, because I'm looking at the used market, I'd have to accept, to some degree, what's available.

Where will you store your trailer? If you can garage it, it's going to stay in its present shape for a long time. Not so much if you store it outdoors. If a 2720 will fit your garage and a 3124 won't, that's a good reason to get a 2720. Also consider its length with the swing hinge on the a-frame, which will make it short enough to fit some garages it would not otherwise, although the hinge has been troublesome for some folks.

Having to crawl around your partner in the middle of the night is a problem. The 3124 doesn't have this issue.

And of course there's money. The 3124 can be more expensive.

I have exactly 18' in my garage. I would probably have to modify the stairs into the house to gain a few more inches if the 2720 were to fit. If I got a 3124 I'd probably get a cover for it. The only issue on my driveway is I think I have 18 or 20 feet from the garage door to the property line. I have another 6 feet to the front sidewalk. So, IF a neighbor complained, even a 3124 could cause me a headache.

We originally got a 2720 QD/SD.....with the dinette. We loved it....we love sitting at a booth. The grandkids slept on the booth/bed, and said it was comfy. Storage was an issue, but we managed pretty well. Then a 3124 came up for sale nearby......we sold the 2720 in 2 days on Craigslist, and bought the 3124. We like it even more. The king bed is great - my husband no longer has to crawl over me (I'm the one who does 3am trips to the lav). The extra kitchen counter and storage is fabulous, and there is much more storage under the bed. It feels and is roomier. We miss the booth.....and yes, even in the 2720, the booth makes it roomier. We took the recliner out of our 3124 and put in 2 folding deck chairs. About the same for towing. Yes, more of a problem for winter storage, but we wouldn't go back to a 2720. Good luck with your decision and choices.....and yes, availability in your area is an issue. We bought the sofa version (3124KS) because it was for sale nearby.....

Thanks,

Your thoughts have been very helpful. I think I might start considering the 3124. The only issue I have to be concerned about is the length in the driveway. I think it's 18' from the garage door to the property line, but I still have another 8 or 10' to the public sidewalk. As I understand it, the 24' is the towing length, so the box length is probably about 22'. As long as the city doesn't care as long as it's not blocking the sidewalk, I may consider it.

Extra cubby space = happy wife = happy hubby.

Just build this, and your 3124 storage problems are solved!

I own a 3124KB which for my needs is ideal. The amount of storage, bed orientation, counter space is perfect for us. I have lived in a condo or apartment home which does not offer the ability to store the camper at home. I do maintain a cover that does offer me a confident storage plan. Either Tyvek or Adcco has a full end to end and side to side cover for the length of the 3124. Or through Camping World or online.

My unit is the KB with king bed, double bed up front and parallel sofas in the living room. One sofa breaks down as a sleeper and the other one does not.

What I don't see as part of the discussion is your tow vehicle. There is quite a jump in weight from the 2720 and 3124 and certainly loaded for several days or more of camping. I know my unit is well over 4000 lbs.

If you have kids I strongly recommend going with a bed (non-slide) model. We have a 3326 King (front end is a slide sofa) and my son is going to quickly outgrow the fold down sofa. We went back and forth between a 3326 vs 3124KB. I liked the 3326 better personally but the sleeping situation gave me pause. The deciding factor was that I was able to roll several high interest credit cards into the loan for the 3326 (our monthly outlay for bills actually decreased). Otherwise I think we would've gone with a 1 year old 3124KB for the same overall payment.

Also from what you're describing I'm not so sure a 3124 is really practical to store on your property. Maybe try and hold out for a 2619? It's only a foot shorter but has the king size bed in the back...

the second digits in the model number is the overall length when towing (my 2720 is 19' 4 " coupling to bumper). The folding hitch can reduce that by 2'. It helps to have a big lot (I have a HOA to contend with that says trailers - car, boat, camping, ... - cannot be visible from the street).

I should have mentioned that by now, I guess. I'll be towing with a Chevy Tahoe, so it should be no problem.

When you say "bed (non-slide)", do you mean the model with the dinette that converts into a bed? This is what I was thinking of

I'm not sure how the 2619 is only a foot shorter than the 3124. Do you mean the 2619 vs the 2720? There's no problem storing a 2720 in my driveway. If it has the folding hitch, it would sit entirely on my property. The 2619 is a no go. It's just too small, and my wife definitely does NOT want the toilet in the bathtub!

In our neighborhood there are several people who store boats or trailers that go up to the city sidewalk. There is far worse parked in front of homes on our street, so it should be okay for me to store a 3124 in my driveway. The closed height is lower than my truck, and our cars park past the city line anyway. Our city is fairly reasonable about things like this. However, I'd have to check with the city to see if they'd make me move it if a neighbor complained.

Have mentioned before but I use natural cover with Florida vegetation in my back yard and HF tarps (a 19x23 silver reflective and a 9x15 cameo in the front. I'll need to replace both this spring. It is never in the sun. Trailer is on a 25x10 slab and raised on 18x18x2" pavers to keep water off tires.

Need to trim the hedge again but have to use a pole saw.

Street view (note some of my vegetation loses leaves this time of the year):

In Florida you get the occasional rain to wash your TM off. In BC we get the occasional sun to dry it off! :D

Sorry let me clarify... bed (non-slide) would have a bed on the front shell similar to the rear bed, plus 2 couches, one of which also folds down into a bed. Sofa or dinette models have an additional front slideout.

Never mind my comment about the 2619, looks like it actually has double beds front and rear. 2518 has a king bed but yes it's a wet bath.
