2720 Closed Length with Swing Hitch?

Hi all,

I'm trying to see if I can fit a standard 2720 with a swing hitch into my garage. Trailmanor's site indicates its 20' 3" closed with the standard hitch. ... also there is no mention of width.. anyone know what the width is?

Thanks kindly,
s-one

The TM specifications page shows 7'7" width plus 5" for the awning.

I dont' recall off the top of my head, but I remember that the measurements I made on ours was spot on to the TM literature.

Thanks for the width Al-n-Sue!

Jim&Joan.. I looked but I didn't see the length with the swing hitch. Or is the 20' 3" with a swing hitch? I mean does the swing hitch come standard so that would be the length?

Thanks all!

The overall length of a recent 2720SL is almost exactly 20 feet - within an inch as measured on mine. Models earlier than about 2002 would be longer because the spare tire was mounted on the rear bumper.

The swing hitch nominally makes it 2 feet shorter, but I seem to recall that it is actually about 22" shorter.

There was a thread a year or so ago in which detailed measurements of the width were posted. The Search tool should turn it up.

My garage is 19 foot 6 inches.

I can park my 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500HD, if I pull it in exactly square.

my 2005 TM 2720 would not fit if it were not for the swing tongue. I have a little over a foot to spare.

I have the factory rear hitch receiver. It sticks out about 6 inches past the bumper. I have several holes in the sheet rock at the back of the garage to prove that the bumper will not hit the wall. I use the rear hitch receiver as a step when washing the roof of the TM.

The 7'7" + 5" for awning is a bit misleading on the part of TM. The overall width may be correct, but removing the awning only gives a little over 1", maybe 2" before you need to deal with the lights that stick out on the sides. I've replaced the 3 big ones with flatter LEDs, and made my awning removable, so that I can fit into my single car garage. It does fit, with some machinations (winch + tracks on floor of garage). I have the swing hitch -- necessary for me -- and I have to put mine in hitch-first, because of the configuration at the back of the garage -- I don't have the full depth for the whole width of the space.

But, it does fit :)

If you need any additional measurements, I can try to help.

The 20'3" is the "tow length", so no, it doesn't reflect the length when folded.
No, the swing hitch is not standard. It is a option ($537 according to the TM site.)

I'd be about 6" short of getting my garage door shut without the swing hitch.

PopBeavers,ThePair, Jim&Joan thank you all much! Now all I have to do is locate one. :)

If a TM was purchased without this option by the original owners can it be purchased afterwards and installed regardless of the year?

Thanks!

Thanks for clarifying - the brochure actually says 5" for awning and lights.

Much debate

...on that question. The short answer is yes. When we looked at first, a couple of them didn't have the swing which was mandatory for us. By the time I had it added, it put the trailer's too $$$.

Fortunately we had one in town come up for sale that had a swing hitch, was in nice shape and at a price we could all agree on.

Some folks caution against aftermarket, but many have done it. I don't think you can get TM to comment on effects. Probably liability and the wide variety in capabilities of places that might do the work.

I can park my 2006 F150 Crew Cab in my garage with a few inches to spare (5 or 6??). The 2720SL with the factory swing hitch fits fine (about 18" to spare). My garage is not overly long or wide.

Awesome! Very good to know.. Now my hunt begins! I know these things are out there sparingly so wish me luck!

In the hunt for 2005+ 2720 SoCal area. :cwm29:

fwiw, when Dinuba RV was still in Rio Vista, CA, they had a local welding shop that could convert a TM to the swing tongue configuration. They are no longer there and I do not know what welding shop it is.

Ok thank you kindly PopBeavers. I'll look them up as soon as I find one.. hopefully it'll already have the factory option swing hitch.

This forum is awesome! What a wealth of info and members!

Thanks!

fwiw, my suggestion only works if you are near the Sacramento/Stockton area.

Assuming that to be true, you could probably call Dinuba RV in Dinuba CA (near Fresno) and see if Stan or Chuck are still around. They would know the name of the welding shop in Rio Vista. Or they may know a shop in the Fresno area.

fwiw, I am the guy that back in 2005 or 2006 had the frame crack at a weld. While it was in this particular welding shop they made a minor change to the configuration. As built at the factory one of the pins goes behind a flat plate. This caused a bit of slop that I could feel under acceleration and braking. The welding shop drilled a new hole, just like the other pin is attached, and all slop has been removed.

I like it that way.

I think I read where The Car Show in Colorado can also do this.

You might also consider Custom RV in Anaheim, CA. They have a reputation for excellent work. I have had some work by them and have no complaints, and I had to drive 366 miles one way to drop it off.

If you live in any other state, I'm not sure I helped all that much, except to confirm that it has been done.

If you happen to be around the California Central Coast in September (I forget the exact date), stop by the TM rally and visit somewhere around 30 TMs camped out for the weekend.

The Car Show does, indeed, do swing hitches. When they made mine, they also added a pair of bolts through the adjoining flat plates that eliminated all possible slop.

Ok thanks! I'm closed to Custom RV so I'll keep my eye out.

For some reason, I guess due to not enough posts, I can't view your picture Inussbau :(

Earlier I suggested that you visit about 30 TM owners at a rally in Pismo Beach, CA. Custom RV will be at the rally.

I don't think number of posts has anything to do with it. But if you're not a sponsoring member the pic might not be available -- not sure about that -- though I thought it would be.
