Thumbs up National Park Documentary

PBS is airing a great documentary on the National Parks this Sunday (at least in my area - check your local listings). They are showing it all day, back to back, and in HD.

Title: National Parks: America's Best Idea
By: Ken Burns

It is on our PBS station (Denver) all week - 6 segments in all Sun - Fri. Unfortunately our PBS does not broadcast in HD yet! :-( I have it set to record so we can watch it at our leisure.

There is also a series named "Great Lodges of the National Parks" that they have been showing that has be fantastic. I think there are 6 parts in all, and I've seen 4 of them so far. Should have the other two by this weekend.
Lots of history and detail on all the old NP lodges. I highly recommend it!

From what I can tell, my PBS/HD channel doesn't broadcast everything in "true" HD.
For example the "Lodges" were not filmed in HD so they simply "blow it up" to fill the screen. It's still better for these failing eyes of mine.

The "Ken Burns" series is filmed in 1080 HD and available for resale on BluRay.

This is what our PBS channel is doing as well. At first I thought they were airing all episodes on Sunday, but they were simply airing episode 1 all day, back to back.
This coming Sat/Sun they are re-airing parts 1-3 on Sat afternoon and then parts 4-6 on Sun afternoon.

I've watched part of the first show - I am recordign them all - and it is pretty good and informative. Since we are going to Yellowstone next summer I'm particularly interested in that park. They just started covering Yellowstone about 2/3 of the way through the first segment, after the history of Yosemite.

With football and this series I'll be watching more TV in the next few weeks than I've watched in ages!!

I've watched parts 1 & 2 in their entirety so far. The detail and history in the series is great. No real beautiful "HD pictures" yet, but plenty of really great old historic picts. It's basically in chronological order and last night's episode (part 2) ended at 1915 and John Muir's death. If you're a history buff (Bluegrass?), or interested in the NPs, this show is for you.
