How to repair paper veneer?

I learned something the hard way tonight. Don't put masking tape on the "wood" parts that have a paper veneer. When I peeled the tape off the veneer came with it in big ugly swatches.

I tried separating the tape and veneer paper and gluing it back on but it looks pretty bad. The area in question is above the fridge around the radio mounting hole.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this, short of replacing the fake wood piece?

I had the same problem with the walls shared between the bathroom and the rear sleeping area. My daughter hung her crayon drawings on the walls with scotch tape. I was thinking of using some furniture touch up pens made by guardsman. Probably won't work well with large area repairs however.

I had the same issue and bought a liquid furniture pen of a similar color. It has a thick felt tip. I had a 1"x3" swipe/tear. The pen did wonders. When I told the wife she looked and said, "what tear?" Well, it's not invisible by any means but pretty darn good. I don't recall the brand but the pen is yellow. Could be minwax but it's locked away in the folded TM.

Here's what I'd try. Go to a local wood supply store or a cabinet shop, and tell them you need a small piece of oak veneer. Some veneer comes with adhesive backing, other types are just very thin raw wood. Wood veneer is very thin and can be easily cut with a sharp utility knife, or a stout pair of scissors. Measure what you need to fit. Use contact cement, or "Liquid Nails" for a small area. Get a half pint oak stain to match the existing color. This should be a relatively inexpensive fix, and you'll probably be quite pleased with the results.

Thanks for all the suggestions - much overdue for bhollister. I took his suggestion and used the wood marking pen on the bits that were not covered by the paper. The only part that doesn't look fine is where I slopped extra glue and the pen wouldn't write on it. Probably would have done better just to go with the pen.
