When I am on a machine that is not mine, I use ping and tracert, because they are almost always there. I don't have to install anything. PingPlotter is entertaining to watch, but requires that it be installed.
I was calling tech support at my isp years ago, pacbell. They asked what the problem was. I told them that there was a connectivity problem, because both ping and tracert could not find the domain name. They said those programs were not supported and that I had to use Netscape. So I said Netscape didn't work either and they let me open a trouble ticket.
I hate it when the help(less) desk knows less than I do.
