Default Couldn't get to the Forum???

Hi all,

I went couldn't get to the TrailManor Forum this weekend from about Friday through this morning. The error was Server not found.

I'm in NW Ohio and using Earthlink. My Interenet connection always worked and I could get to everything else. I see by the messages that it indeed wasn't down, so any idea what might have happened?

Hi Keith
I also have earthlink email and sometimes the server will get confused by old cookie files in your browser program. I will right click on the Browser icon, select properties and erase all temp files and cookie files. This usually corrects the problem. Good luck....

Thanks Gary, I'll try that if it happens again.

I work in networking. Gary is most likely right as to your issue, but there can be other problems. I work on issues like this fairly often. I know our Internet connection is working, because I can check our VPN concentrator and see who is currently connected remotely. The user's connection is also working, because they can get to Google or some other popular site like that. There are two issues that normally turn up. The first issue is DNS (Dynamic Name Service). Computers and the network do not understand www.google.com. They send www.google.com to the DNS servers to get it's IP address, which they do understand and can use. The other problem is an issue on the Internet between you and the board. The Internet is made up of a bunch on different ISP's networks. Better than 90% of the time, I trace problems to where two ISPs peer with each other. It is also quite common for it to be between two ISPs that are neither ours or my remote user's.

Doug,

I think it was probably an ISP problem. When it did come back up I didn't have to log in or anything again. If I had cleared my Cookies I think I would have had to log in again.

Could I have used TraceRT to locate the problem, or what tool do you use?

I like Ping Plotter when I am trying to find the hole in the network. I downloaded it free several years ago, but I don't recall where I got it.

Tracert is builtin and is adequate for occasional use, assuming you understand what it is reporting.

Let me know if you continue to have problems and I'll work with the ISP to resolve. Thanks for letting me know either way. You can always email me at [email protected]

Around the time that Keith Wire started this thread, the following started happening during my use of the forum.

After getting a list of new posts, clicking on the "Go to first new post" button of a thread often results in an "Error 504 Gateway Timeout", but clicking on the thread itself works fine. Going back to the (not refreshed) list of new posts and clicking on the "Go to first new post" button produces another "Error 504 Gateway Timeout".

Default It happened again last night

Hi Chris,

It happend again last night at about 10:30 PM EDST. I was able to get to the site about 7:00, but I tried again at 10:30 and it just came back as DNS not found.

This morning it is OK. I am accessing from a different location though as I am at a client's site today.

I'll check again tonight and let you know. I don't believe it is my machine or anything with my browser config, I think some Domain Controller isn't updating TrailManorOwnders.com correctly.

PopBeavers, I found PingPlotter at www.pingplotter.com and will probably get/register a copy later today. It looks very nice and I can use it to keep on top of my own network. Thanks for the tip.

Sorry I did not get back with you sooner, Keith. I was dealling with a slow response issue at work yesterday. It turned out not to a network issue and instead a website that does not work well through a proxy server. PingPlotter looks pretty neat. I might have to play with it sometime. Yes, tracert is a tool in the old toolbox. Another very important tool is simple basic ping command.
