As of today, the price of mid-grade is $2.18 and still climbing. I'm noticing a severe decrease in the amount of highway traffic, including semi's. Although the local State Park campground is already fully booked the upcoming holiday weekend. Leave it to us campers to keep the economy going

As a reminder, Memorial Day and Labor Day are the two worst weekends for traffic fatalities nationwide. No trip is worth spending, if its spent in a hospital due to an accident. Please slow down and drive/arrive safely. Unfortunately, I'll be out there watching for you instead of being able to set in the shade of the awning at a camping spot.

Are you also noticing a decrease in average traffic speeds? I just got back from a round trip to Glenwood Springs and it seemed that traffic speeds have dropped to somewhere right around and sometimes even 5 to 10 mph under the posted speed limit. A few...but not many were going well above the speed limit...and most of the speeders seemed to have out-of-state plates. I normally tow at 65 mph on the Interstate when traffic is light; raising that to 70 in heavier traffic so I don't cause as much traffic turbulence from lane changing (with the speed limit being 75). I was amazed that I seemed to be moving right with the traffic on I25 between Colorado Springs and Denver when running at 70. Six months ago, I would have had to be driving at about 80 to be moving with the traffic.

Ray,

are you trailer speed limits the same as the regular speed limits? I am in calif and always feel like i am going to get run over when i am towing at 60pm (Colorado Cop-do police give tickets for 5 mph over freeway speed limits?? i have always wondered ) when every on else is going 75-80..

guess in california everyone seems to be driving as fast as traffic allows! anywhere from 0 to 80 - and going to vegas - i see over 80 easy.. guess we aren't trying to save gas by reducing our speedlimits!

I've noticed when I'm driving on state roads at 55, most people are still driving over the limit (55). When several cars end up behind me on 2 lane roads, I find an easy place to pull over and "let'em go."

The general rule of thumb is to monitor traffic for "flow of traffic". This means that if the average drivers are doing 5 - 10 over and you are staying with them, you most likely won't be singled out for your speed. We watch for the vehicles that are weaving in and out of traffic and usually doing more than normal traffic flow. One of the speed limits that we can, but seldom do write for is " 1 - 5 miles over posted". They really have to be doing something stupid for this to cause concern.
Colorado does not have a seperate speed for different vehicles. This is good because it keeps traffic flow constant.

Ray, yeah, it does seem as if people are slowing down. Probable reason is that they realize that they are actually saving a little fuel.

As CC noted above, Colorado does not have a separate speed limit for trucks and trailers...which as he also notes is very wise because the traffic turbulence from lane changes around slower moving vehicles (those running more than about 5 mph below the average speed) is a far greater cause of accidents than is higher truck/trailer speeds. With as much experience as Kali has with traffic, I'm surprised they still have such a low speed for trucks/trailers.

The only place where Colorado has separate speeds for some classes of vehicles is on long and very steep mountain descents where vehicles over 35,000 GVW are usually limited to 30 mph to minimize runaways due to brake failure.

Gas prices actually dropped a little here in the last week...regular is $2.19 vs. $2.23 earlier in the week.

No letup in traffic, it rained here this morning (first time after a long dry spell) and there are accidents all over. People only drive slower if there is so much traffic that they can't go any faster.

We're just going to hang around the house this weekend (at least I am, hubby will probably have to work).

Just filled my cruiser and the price of mid-grade dropped .03 per gallon from last night . The station manager said that it is possible that gas will drop .20 during the next week . Looking forward to it getting low just before we hit the road next weekend ;D.
