They probably realized that if they didn't, there would have been a march on the corporate offices with clubs and pitchforks.

Are you sure about that?
IIRC, that was the main reason for engineering (wrong word to be used in conjunction with GM) the bail out in the method it was done. If that was the case the entire CBA (collective bargaining agreement) would have also been shredded as well.

The customer was not represented at the collective bargaining agreement hearings. If you want interest in a failing company you need to show up.
I was watching a congressional hearing on CSPAN before the reorganization was final where they had the CEO of GM answering questions. One of the questions was about the new GM product liability of GM1 product liability, warranties and support. He said that it will be a different company and the old GM will no longer be in business and the old GM was responsible. The new GM had no responsibility for those product liability. He also said it would be in the best interest to protect the GM brand image and service those claims.

The "customer" is never represented in a CBA.
What you mean is the "customer" was not represented in the bankruptcy hearings.

Apparently the issue is with a supplier and these are just the using vehicles " defective Takata airbags" what it does not say is whether the defect causes deployment (do not drive) or prevents deployment (be aware).
To find that out you have to go to http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchSafetyIssues and select TAKATA as the manufacturer. Unfortunately the web site is not responding.

A Safercar.gov page (managed by NHTSA) says:
NHTSA Statement on Takata Air Bag Inflators
"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received notification from BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota that they are conducting limited regional recalls to address a possible safety defect involving Takata brand air bag inflators.
"Today’s action is influenced by a NHTSA investigation into six reports of air bag inflator ruptures, all of which occurred in Florida and Puerto Rico.
"Based on the limited data available at this time, NHTSA supports efforts by automakers to address the immediate risk in areasthat have consistently hot, humid conditions over extended periods of time.
Consumers impacted by the recalls should have their vehicles serviced promptly once they receive notification from their vehicle manufacturer. NHTSA remains in close communication with the supplier and automakers to gather additional data and will take appropriate action based on our findings.”
Links below that take you to the pages that Padgett indicates are off-line at the moment.
Regardless, NHTSA clearly states the issue is unexpected deployment, not a lack thereof. News media has added that shrapnel was released with the deployments, and the last report I saw was that four deaths were involved.
Most people don't know that their airbags should be replaced after 10 years anyway.

Actually, you mean a 1973 Olds Toronado. Don't you?, cause that was the first vehicle that had an airbag.

That was one bad car. Did you ever see the advertisement where they were driving it with no rear wheels. I think it was on the salt flats with a trailer and a WDH and no rear wheels. The message they were trying to get across was it was front wheel drive.
The only reason I remember it, was my boss bought one the first year they came out, and all the good-old-boys were joking about the picture of it with no rear wheels.
