Passport America
I am looking at some campgrounds and ran across a discount card called Passport America, does anyone have this and if so what are your experiences with this company. Thank you in advance.

Overall, the impressions on this board (and elsewhere) are not good unless you are willing to play by their very stringent, and often arbitrary, demands. That is not to say that they can't be good for some campers, but investigate very carefully, and see if they meet your needs. Start here, and work your way back.

We have used it a lot over the past four years. A lot of restricitons. Go to their website and look at various campgrounds and read the restrictions to give you some idea. Eventhough there are many restrictions, we work around them, I have the locations located in my Garmin Gps and this helps to locate the campgrounds. Also we get the book from year to year which helps. When we go to the dentist in South Carolina, we stay at Swamp Fox on our way north and have saved a lot of money using it there alone. Coming across I 10 from LA to Tampa, we stayed at several locations. A lot of them not very nice, but all we wanted was a place to stay overnight and head on. Watch how far they are from your route and dont waste a lot of money getting to them. You will eat up what you save in gas. We renewed for $44 per year including their book and got an additional 3 months. Hope that helps. John

Thanks John I went to the web site last night and read up on restrictions and places where I can stay, it appears that there are quit a few in Colorado I could use. I am also traveling from Wyoming to Ohio this spring and I tracked down my route and it might pay for itself on that trip, actually I believe it will pay more than for itself on that trip. I think I will try it for one year and see what happens, the worst I would be out $44 but if that is the worst to happen to me I can live with that. I was wondering another thing, I am a widow of a 100% disabled vet so I have a military ID was wondering if very many places give you a break with that. I know I can stay at military bases for little money if they have hook ups but am just trying to make sure I try to get the most bang for my buck.

I am not sure of the military vet discount. Sorry. We traveled from Ohio to Yellowstone a few years ago and used the passport a lot. Also check the National Parks and Corp of Engineers. We use them a lot also. Discount for over 65 and probably for disabled. Might want to check it out. John

Stop by any national park or forest service visitor center and get an inter agency pass if you are 62 or older. Price is $10 and gets you camping at half price at federal camp grounds such as NP, NF, or ACOE(core of engineers). Electric typically isn't discounted at federal CG. The pass will usually get you into NP free. It may not apply at federal day use areas so read the fine print at the information kiosk.

There is a short ad/article on Passport America in today's RV Daily Tips
http://www.rvtravel.com/?q=daily-rv-tips-issue592990
Bear in mind that although this is a fun site, and sometimes useful, a lot of its content reads like the new car reviews in the Sunday paper - there has never been a new car that the writers didn't like. Sometimes they have to search harder for reasons to like it than other times but they always succeed in finding something.
At any rate, as posted earlier, Passport America can be a good thing if it meet your needs. Be sure to check their maps - I seem to recall that almost all of their campgrounds in the "Western Region" are concentrated in San Diego and Los Angeles. That's great if you want to go to San Diego or Los Angeles - not so much if you want to go elsewhere.
Finally, it appears that when you go online, you will find two outfits with very similar names. One is PassportAmerica, the other is Passport-America. I have no idea if they are related.
