You might also consider asking a forum member who lives near the unit to see if they might be willing to drive over for an inspection. I'm sure there are some folks who would be willing to do that, especially if you bought them a lunch.

It looks like the previous owner removed a periscope that he had mounted in the ceiling. I suspect he repaired it blindfoled and perhaps with a wee bit too much tonic...
I would think it is manageable.
