I'm sorry, what's a "cantilever rack" ? I'm guessing one half of the racks like they use on cars to haul bikes and skis? Thanks

Redhawk, here is the webpage for the TrakRac cantilever addion: http://www.tracrac.com/accessories/c...xtension-22666

The rack system is expensive, but very usable. I got this system because I could not find any other rack system that I could also have a tonneau cover.

My signature has a photo of the rack system with canoe onboard, and also my bikes riding on Yak Racks which I make some adapters that slide onto the TrakRac rails.

We unhitch. I don't recall ever wanting to stay somewhere with the TM still hitched up. I imagine if you're overnighting at Walmar or something. Thule also has cross bars that very easily attach to the truck's roof so you can (I have) use both the bed and the roof of your truck to support your boat. This way you won't have any part of your boat hanging off the back.

We would stay in the Trailmonor without unhitching on overnite stops getting to other camping destinations. Also, we would open up the TM for lunch or to retrieve needed items on the road.....my planning wasn't always the best.

If someone never anticipates opening up the TM without unhitching, then setting the canoe far forward is not a problem. Even if the need arises that you do need to raise the TM on the road, unhitching is probably easier than moving the canoe. For us, leaving the canoe in place, not unhitching, and raising the TM was the best option for those times that we needed to do that.

Yeah, I realized on our last road trip that there are times while traveling that it is nice to be able to stop and open with out unhitching for that quick nites rest on the road.

Are the foam blocks that attach to the canoe and go between the boat and car roof worth using till I find a thule or yak single rack for the roof?
