Default Standardized tow ratings coming

I just noticed an article in yesterday's paper. According to the Detroit Free Press, automakers have agreed to a standardized set of towing-capability tests. These will replace today's hodge-podge of arbitrary "tests" that each maker devises for himself. Starting with the 2013 model year, not only will we be able to compare the ratings of various trucks against each other (which today is meaningless), but we will understand how those ratings were reached.

I can't wait. It will answer a lot of the questions and discussions we have here.

This is really good news for all of us. It would be particularly good news if the manufacturers applied similar rating approaches for all of their vehicles and not just their larger light trucks, of course. At best, similar standards will be applied across all TVs, but even in the worst case there will be a substantial trickle down effect due to competitive pressures, and these standards will eventually result in more competent tow vehicles of all kinds and help people make better towing decisions.

Unfortunately, most of this new rating process remains about the "go" side of the issue without enough emphasis on the "stop" side IMO. For example, wouldn't it be great if somebody, anybody, published a measured stopping distance from 60mph at GCWR?

And, of course, whatever thinking they do about RV trailers will be about standard travel trailers and not about folded TrailManors. The trailer sway problem with full height travel trailers is a huge issue in RV safety, especially during emergency maneuvers, and the "frontal area" issue can be a big deal when you're driving into prevailing westerly Kansas winds on a hot day (not quite like climbing passes in Arizona, but it's for most of the day instead of just half an hour).
