Default Towing a 2720SL with Toyota 4-Runner

I have a 2004 4-Runner V6 with standard tow bar (have pulled a 16 ft. boat before). Has anyone used such a tow vehicle with the 2720 SL? I'm wondering if I'm starting with the wrong vehicle before buying a TM. Thanks.

Go to search and type in Toyota 4-Runner. Lots of info there.

There are several on this site who tow with a V6 4-Runner - maybe they'll get on here and tell you all about it. Sounds like a pretty good rig to tow the smaller TMs.

Talking I'm the most chatty of them. 4R works Really Great!

The older Generation 4Rs (like yours) are a bit less capable than the newer ones like mine, but they're plenty strong and gutsy enough. (And we've got at least one guy having a great time with 1999.) I'll admit that a PU has better weight balance, and the wheelbase is a tiny bit shorter than some would like, but a 4R is simply a GREAT vehicle for the 2619 and 2720 models. I live at almost 6000 ft, and climb fairly steep Sierra Nevada grades on nearly all of our trips.

The 4th Generation 4Runner years are 2003-present. He has exactly the same model as you do. The 245hp 4 liter V6 wasn't available until 2004. My dad has an '05 with this motor. The '03 came only with the Tundra/Sequoia V8. 6000lb tow ratings.

I have a 3rd Gen ('96-'02) with the 3.4 liter 185hp V6. 5000lb rating. Adequate for the job but my dad's has much more power. The new one must make a great tow vehicle. The FJ also has the 4.0 but has a shorter wheel base and may not tow quite a well as the 4runner.

The 2nd Gen 4Runner ('90-'95) had a 3.0l 150hp V6 and a 3500lb rating as the largest motor. It would struggle towing a TM as the motor had poor torque. It has about the power as the current 4cyl Toyota motor.

1st Gen 4R ('84-'89) came with a 22R or 22RE 4cyl and a 3500lb rating. The 22RE motor was basically an industrial forklift motor and very reliable. They stopped building them in '95 but I have friends that have 100's of thousands of miles on them.

We had an 05 four runner with the 240 HP and it towed our boat which weighs right at 3000 lbs loaded just fine. We did just trade that in on an 07FJ Cruiser and it has the exact same motor but is wider. Not sure if that makes a difference but it towes our 2720 SL without a problem. We do also have a WDH which will help out any vehicle when towing.
