Default Generator question

Our tm has a LG 8000btu ac. Can we use the Honda eu2000 to power this ac?

Yes......it will power it easily. It'll hardly put a strain on the generator. That A/C unit only draws ~850W.

Wayne, can the 1000w generator kick start this ac? Thanks.

Yep, Wayne is right. 10 amps is only about 1,200 watts and I would not expect a 850 watt a/c to pull more than another 400 watts starting up.

A 1 KW genset might keep an a/c running but if it could handle the startup amps you would be very close to the limit. There are other factors too. For example, at higher altitudes your 1KW genset probably could not handle the load.

You would also probably need the power regulation inverter type gensets (like the EU2000, et al) have. Contractor grade generators' voltage and frequency vary quite a bit. These fluctuations impact the current draw appliances require so a marginal setup might not work at all.

The nice thing about the Honda 2000 series is that they can be configured with 120/30A receptical. The 2000 series is great if you can afford to buy them as a pair.

Also, if you have not purchased your genset don't forget to look at the Yamaha 2400 (about $300 more than the Honda). I have used the 2400 all the way to over 6,500' and have been able to start rooftop a/c. For some reason it won't run the pardette's hair dryer and toaster at the same time...go figure!!!

I don't have the answer to that. It probably will but you may want to try one.

I had a 10,000BTU (side) A/C in my '98 TM. I ran the A/C off of my Honda EU2000i genset in 115* temps (for several hours) without a problem. The genset hardly even broke a sweat. You could hear it ramp up just a bit (for 2 seconds) when the A/C cycled. Other than that, the genset was pretty quiet.

I would think that a 1,000W genset would run at nearly full throttle and be very noisy. The real issue is whether or not the genset would not be able to handle the start-up of the compressor when cycling on a hot day.

If you do go with a 1,000W genset, it may be important to plug the A/C unit directly into the genset to avoid any other loads, like the converter trying to charge the battery or run your 12V items. To accomplish this, you will need to take off the outside ventilation panel (4 screws). Inside, you will find a normal 110V outlet and the A/C will be plugged into that outlet. Just unplug it and plug it into a 25' 12G extension cord that is plugged into your genset.

How does altitude affect a generator?

There is less oxygen at higher altitudes. If not tuned for less oxygen, that means the engine will run rich, and will not output peak power. In terms of a genny, it won't output it's full wattage.

All internal combustion engines, including those in cars, suffer the same fate.
