Clearance above bed when closed
Quick question and hopefully an easy answer.
How much clearance is there between the queen mattress in my 2720SL and the ceiling when closed? I would like to add a shallow (2”) topper and/or leave the comforter on the bed when I close it up.
The mattress is pretty comfortable, but the upholstery leaves something to be desired. A nice 2” memory foam topper would be lovely

There's not much room, A comforter might fit, but closing can get hard depending on how thick it is. I'd try closing with the comforter and then with the two inch topper. Don't force it if it doesn't want to close. From what most have said they just roll it up and leave it on the floor towards the front.

Believe it or not, not all TMs have exactly the same amount of closed space above the bed. It depends on exactly where the shell is mounted on the lift arms. And don't forget that the roof is bowed, so there is more clearance in the middle, and less at the edges. And don't forget that you have to leave space for the ceiling light, which is near the edge.
Having said all that, in my particular TM, we added a 1-1/2 inch foam topper, which stays on the bed, which is good because it is under the sheets. On top of that, we have a thin blanket which can stay, and a nice big quilt which cannot stay. When we close, we fold it up and carry it on the couch. Not a big deal.
YMMV, of course.

Thanks guys. I figured there wouldn’t be a lot of forgiveness there but hoped I could manage a light topper under the sheets. The other possibility would be to put an actual mattress there. A 4” or 5” topper could work in place of the mattress that is there.
I’ll check it out next week and see what might work.

All,
This may seem convoluted, but it works for us. We took our queen foam mattress (which was way too firm/hard for us) out of the nice cover and replaced it with an inexpensive 1-1/2 inch memory foam topper. Then, we bought a nice Tempur-pedic 3-inch memory foam topper (expensive, but very nice) and put it in a basic mattress protector. So, basically, we have a really nice memory foam topper on top of a cheap memory foam topper, which serves as a base in the original cover that has the waterproof vinyl on the bottom. I weigh 150 pounds and I find it comfortable...perhaps it may not be enough support for folks who weigh significantly more.
On our full bed, which our daughter uses, we simply put an inexpensive 1-1/2 topper on, which stays there. The TM closes fine with it.
Good luck!
John

That might be a bit convoluted, but only once Something to consider. I might just put a good 5" memory foam topper in that existing cover and a light mattress cover over that (to get rid of the scratchy feeling of the upholstery).
I don't have a full bed at the other end, with the SL, but I will likely get a roll-up foam pad that I can tuck away in that upper cabinet (that isn't big enough for much anyway) for the trips that I have my friend riding shot-gun. Gives that sofa a bit more of a comfortable sleeping surface, eliminates the crack somewhat at least.
I'll bring over a thick comforter as a test "topper" & check out the clearances next time i'm over at the TM (she's in a storage yard here in town - easier than trying to park her in my front yard, and actually better for her - she won't be parked under a 50' pine!). I figure I can set up my video camera inside as I try to close her up. Give me a really good idea of what kind of space I have to work with in there.

With a 2720SL, you can close and latch the rear shell, then poke your head and a bright flashlight up through the front of the still-open front shell, to see the situation. Even better - have a friend close and latch the rear shell while you watch through the front.

If Bill says there's some slight difference with each camper, you may have slightly more hight. I was curious and did just that. Closed and locked the back shell down and crawled inside to get pictures and measurements. Not a lot, but it's interesting to check out.

We put a 2" topper from Wally world... No issues other than a good nights sleep!
