Default Re-upholstered Dinette cushions

We recently reupholstered our dinette cushions. We used this idea:
http://littlevintagetrailer.com/2012...ette-cushions/
We just took the foam and batting out of the maroon covers and used a staple gun on the plywood to fasten the new material on them.

I had planned to put velcro on the backs of the plywood and velcro on the trailer to hold the cushions up. Once we got them in the TM, we discovered they stay up without the velcro. Bonus!

I LOVE this idea. Thanks for sharing. Your cushions look great!

Have you tried to lay them flat for a bed? I'm wondering how they would fit together with the plywood backing. I'm guessing you cut the plywood a little smaller than the cushions?

Thanks!

We used the original foam and batting, so the cushions are essentially the same size as they originally were. The plywood is 1/4 inch, so that doesn't add much to the equation anyway, but all the cushions have the same amount, so that equals out.

Since you posted the question, I did try them out as a bed. (This is not something we have done yet in practice). They seemed to be OK, as good as they would be before we did this. The plywood rests on the table, just like the cushions would. I did notice that the backs weren't quite as high up as the seats - maybe we pulled on the fabric harder and condensed the foam more on the backs then on the seats. I'm sure you deal with issues in this anyway with 8 pieces making up the mattress.

After I cut the plywood to the same measurements as the foam, my wife told me the plywood was supposed to be 1-2 inches less in length and width, so I had to re-cut them. I was Ok with this anyway, as my first cuts were with a circular saw that damaged the plywood edge quite a bit and was hard to keep in a straight line. Most of the way through the first cuts I started using a jig saw in the "fine" setting and a plywood blade, and the edges were much nicer. So for the second cut I took about an inch and a half off with the jigsaw, which gave us about 3/4 of an inch less plywood than foam around the edge. One thing I don't thing they talked about in the directions, but we thought was a great idea so we did it - we cut off the corners off the plywood.
