What do you care if you offend him? He didn't care about offending you by asking you to spend time looking at a trailer that he's asking $8500 for and clearly isn't worth that much.

$8,500 is about fair market value for an '01 TM in good condition. If anyone should be offended, it should be you.

He should feel very honored that you would even consider making an offer on something in that condition. All he can do is say "No", if he doesn't like the offer. In that case, consider yourself blessed and walk-away.....with a smile...

Take a look through these:

You can tell him that based on your research, similar models in better condition have sold for considerably less. This person doesn't seem to be concerned about insulting you by asking way too much for his TM. Because of the design of the TM and the beating any RV takes during transport, they need to be pretty rugged. This means that repairs that might work at home may not necessarily hold up well in the TM. IMHO, I would spend the cost of a trip and possibly motel and travel to get one in better condition at a lower cost.

He's probably talking about the tracks for the support arms under the bed. There are guides that hold them in, sometimes they become cracked or warped. They're easy to replace and you can get the parts from the factory. Also all the washers & parts that keep the support arms affixed to the track need to properly spaced and adjusted. I'd ask him to be more specific.

If you make a list of all the things that need to be fixed and it's fairly long, this may help justify making a lower offer. How long has it been for sale?

A quick peek at the NADA guide shows a low retail value of about $4K, not that the NADA guides for used TrailManors are always representative of what good, clean used ones sell for. But it's something you can print out and show him.

At that price it's not like you have to buy it before someone else does. Give him a list of the things that need to be fixed and offer him $4500. Tell him to take his time. I don't think that unit is going anywhere. Or he could fix all the things that are wrong and you can renegotiate.

One thing to consider if you are going to do the repairs yourself is do you have a good place to work on it and the time to do the work? You should be able to get most of the parts at the facotry or at a good RV store.

If you do get it for a decent price and decide to do the work, you will get lots of help here - just include pictures!

Good luck.

From what I am reading he is offending you by trying to sell it. Sounds like you might be opening a great can of "unknown problems" if you buy it. RVs are not fun if they cause too many problems. To answer your original question...$0.00.

A lot of people list items (like used cars & RVs) at "Fair market value" knowing full well that they will never get anything close to "Fair market value" for the item. They list the item with absolutely no consideration for all of the people that come to see the item and have no interest in buying it due to it's poor condition.

They list it at a price that is far above it's "true value", hoping to find a compromise somewhere between it's "true value" and it's "market value". That type of marketing strategy is flat dishonest and the seller has no consideration for others.

DON'T fall for his game. Set a reasonable offer, based on what you feel it will cost you to get it up to "fair market value" in parts and labor. You may be very sorry if you waver from that.

asked a few more questions and made an offer for $4500 ... he responded saying he would order : door latch, front window cover latch, and side access cover..... says it has not experienced any flooding or leaks and that all appliances work to best of his knowledge.... he is including the weight distribution hitch with bars and tote tank.... lowest he is willing to go is $6000 and I believe him (at least for now)

I would run, not walk, from this thing. I don't even think I would pay $4500 for it, in fact I know I wouldn't. There has got to be other TM's out there in better shape and at a much more reasonable amount. I would take your time and do some other looking around. As spring progresses more TM's will show up here.

And lastly, do you really want to spend all your time working on this thing?
