Thumbs down Lift Kit 2720Sl 2005

I had the dealer remove the lift kit from my new 2720Sl so I would have room to put it in my garage. After my first trip 3000 miles which went great I found that the Tire's had been rubbing the wheel well's, no damage was do. I installed them yesterday sure glad the dealer gave them to me. If anyone else has remove them you may want to check the top of the wheel well. Guess I'll be letting air out of the tire's.

The tire's are the one's from Trailmanor and the air pressure was at 50psi they rubbed on the top as if the tires are to tall or the trailer set to low they just hit a little but still should not hit at all I had no trouble towing at all. I'm taking it to the dealer next week for a few minor thing's I plan on letting him know.

OK, Recon1, I think I'm confused.

First, T_C is exactly right. DON'T let air out of the tires, at least for travel. If you have to let air out in order to get it into your garage, be sure to re-inflate before travelling any distance.

The stock 2720SL comes with 14" tires, and wheel wells designed for 14" tires. Works fine. I think you can special-order a 5000-pound axle and 15" tires as a single line-item option. (A great, option by the way!) The 15" tires will probably rub in the 14" wheel wells, so I bet the option includes a lift kit to provide extra tire clearance.

Did you buy the option package (bigger tires, heftier axle, lift kit), and then remove ONE PART of the option (the lift kit)? I don't think you can do that. The option is a single unified package.

FWIW, you have my sympathy. My 2002 2720 SL fits through my garage door with less than 1/2" to spare. I would love to add a lift kit, but if I did, the TM wouldn't fit through the door. When I trade in my 2002 TM for a 2006 model, I really want the 5000 pound axle and 15" tires - and I am hoping that the low profile roof air conditioner will make up the difference.

In the meantime, I think that the wheel wells are a single fiberglass piece, screwed to the inside floor of the TM. I bet that you can unscrew them from the floor, and shim them up on a strip of 1/2" thick hardwood or aluminum channel. Should be pretty straightforward. If your TM is like mine, you need height - the width and length of the wells is OK.

I am assuming that you have checked the height of your garage door opening when the door is open. Is the height of the opening limited by the lower edge of the door, or by the door frame? Sometimes, you'll find that the door doesn't open quite all the way, and you can adjust the opener to give you another 1/2" or 1" of height.

Let us know what you find.

Bill

Default Lift kit for 3023

Please check before ordering but the 2004 3023 should already have the lift kit installed. It's an option on the 2619 and 2720 models.

Please do not use the stabilizer jacks for work under the TM. You could use them for the lifting you plan and to help hold up the trailer but they are not designed to do what you want, go get a set or two of "jack stands". The jack stands are for holding things (cars, trailers) up for longer times and are more steady than sissor jacks. Note that the sissor jacks are all attached from side to side and not all that stable in front/back movement. If you were not detaching the axle this might be a mute point but for this job, use the stands. I'll bet that they could be rented for next to nothing if you knew where to look. I'm almost sure they cost under $10.

Default height

My trailer came with the lift kit I did not order it that way it also has 14" tires the problem is not the lengh or width it's the height that's why I put the kit back in I'll let the dealer figure it out. I'm only letting enough air out of the tire's to get it in the garage they will be air back up as soon as it's in so it does not set on low tire's that's not good on tires either. The kit is easy to install but I would not use the stabilizer jack to lift the trailer at all, they are there to stabilize I'm sure they would lift it I just don't thank it a good idea. I jacked it up at the axle and put safety stands on both side's of the axle at the frame I did lower the stabilizer's just for added safety. I keep my jack under the axle an remove the two bolts holding it, then I lowered the axle just far enough the install the lift. I did remove the tires just to make it easy to do I thank it took about 30 min. but I do have air tool's I'm a old retired mechanic more tired then anything. Hope the help's you.

The tire rubbing the well almost makes me wonder if there was a change in wheel well radius when they went to the 15's, but they might have mismatched one with the old wells and the new tires. Maybe a long shot, but worth looking at. Something is clearly amiss.
