Default Where do you buy brake shoes? What size?

We are in a campsite in California and I thought I heard a brake shoe rubbing metal. Wanted to pull the wheel and hub. If pad is gone, where do I buy new shoes. Car auto parts store? I have an 04 2720. Want to be safe than sorry before I pull the hub of where to get a new one. Any tricks before I get started. Thanks in advance, John. At Wilderness Lakes, Thousand Trails, Menifee, Ca. Any idea of what size. I tried to search and could not find info. Still got to get home to Florida from California in March.

TJ -

The Dexter Axle website (dexteraxle.com) has a table listing Brake Shoe Replacement Kits

On this table under Electric Brakes, we find
Brake Size - 10" x 2 1/4" (3.5K)
Shoe and lining replacement (one brake) - K71-047-00

This is probably a part number that is unique to Dexter, but presumably any brake shop can cross-reference it to another manufacturer. At worst, go to an RV repair place or RV dealer's service desk and buy this kit. Since Dexter is the major hub/axle/brake manufacturer for RVs, they all should know it.

The table I am talking about is found at
http://www.dexteraxle.com/i/u/614960...Parts_Kits.pdf

There are also tables for replacement bearings, seals, magnets, and so forth.

If the pads need to be replaced, I would skip buying new pads and simply buy new brake assemblies. Easier to install, you get a magnet as well (which probably also needs replacing anyway), and literally only a few dollars more than pads. The assemblies listed below are $27/side at easternmarine.com, which is usually where I get them (but will likely be not fast enough for you).

Dexter part numbers:
10" x 2-1/4" Electric Brake Assy. - Right Hand / 3.5k #K23-027-00
10" x 2-1/4" Electric Brake Assy. - Left Hand / 3.5k #K23-026-00

I would also get new tang washers in case yours break off when you pull the wheel....they are cheap, maybe $1/each. You need 1" ID.

According to Dexter's website, the closest Dexter distributor to you that also sells retail is about 80 miles. List is below. The first place is only wholesale, but if you beg/plead with them, they might sell to you, especially if you perhaps buy from one of the other places and then just pick it up at Stag, since Stag has drop-shipped to me before under those circumstances. Stag is a huge place. I have bought from Arrow Trailer Supply several times before (with Stag fulfilling the order), and have had good luck dealing with a guy named Mike.

While you're at it, you might want to replace the drums too if the pads are shot. You can certainly get the part of the drum that contacts the pad resurfaced, but you will not find anywhere in Southern California that will resurface the face that contacts the magnet. I know because I looked. I figure replacing the drums once every 10 years isn't bad......these same places will have the drums....they are maybe $50/each IIRC.

John, on the wheel that you heard the squeal, have you noticed any significantly larger amount and size of "brake dust" than is seen on the other side? I don't mean the ordinarily fine dust that one can see on just about any wheel - I mean grains that are four or five times that size. I am seeing that kind of difference between wheels on the curb and street sides of my TM and wondering if it is normal wear.

You all are absolute life savers. I plan on pulling the wheel Tuesday since I have nothing planned. Wife wants me to play bridge Monday and Wednesday. I will know more then. At least I have options. We need to move 10 miles down the road on Thursday to comply with Thousand Trails two weeks in and one week out. I will know more when I pull the wheel. Thanks so much to all of you. You are great. John. I will let you know more as I proceed.

I am somewhat embarrassed, but better to tell the truth than make up a lie to save face. I pulled both hubs and brake shoes look fine. What is making the noise when I hit the brakes is the rear brakes on the TV. I know, I can't hear crap, part of getting old. When the trailer is hooked up, it takes more pressure for the TV to stop consequently causing the brakes needing more pressure to stop. I did not hear this noise when not pulling the TM, but I am sure that is where it is coming from when I pull the TM. I am taking the Isuzu in for rear brake work, Thursday. I think I will buy an extra brake assembly. Found them on Ebay for $24. I also plan on buying extra set of wheel bearings. Any info about the wheel bearings size would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for everyone's help.

BTW we made it to bridge and came in in the middle. There are some great bridge players in Sun City, California. John

If you go with the entire backing plate option. It might be worth while to look into the brakes that are self adjusting as a complete assembly. They are about 2x the price, but having them self adjust and always being adjusted would be worth it to me.
