Final update:
Finally found a lull in the camping schedule.

I did get the 1 1/2" socket that Shane286 recommended. A little PB blaster, some time to soak in, then an attempt to remove it with the socket wrench. Could not get enough "mustard" on it...

Then I took Wavery advice and got an impact wrench. That did the trick!
