You have kind of answered your own question since it is not working. You can check the electrical schematics for a/c and see if there are any inline fuses and see if they are intact.
If the compressor is not switching on there could be a number of things wrong.
1. The compressor is just shot.
2. Thermostat faulty
3. Wiring problems
4. Leaky system and freon depleted
5. Compressor thermal shutdown switch faulty
If you are handy with a meter and know your way around electrical circuits you can probably narrow down your problem. As far as service goes, be careful not to exceed the cost of a replacement a/c.
