I should have pointed out, but didn't, that in the original configuration of the trailer, the lid of the storage compartment CAN BE REMOVED WITHOUT RAISING THE REAR SHELL. Many owners don't realize this. All that is usually required is to unsnap the two rear corner latches (not the big center latches).
The rear shell normally presses down on the compartment lid, which holds it against the rubber cushions by friction. Opening the latches relieves the downward pressure, allowing the lid to be slid out and reinserted without raising the shell.
If you put hinges on the lid, it can't slide out, of course.
