I had the valves replaced at my local propane and propane accessory dealer (Suburban Propane) this past fall/winter. Cost $60 each tank for a new valve assembly, inspection, and propane fill. I did find it funny that they charged $20 to fill the tanks when the one tank was full when I brought it (where does that propane go?) and Country Max (farm/animal supply store) will fill a 20lb tank for $7.99.

The propane is captured.

Like you, I had a valve replaced a while ago. The technician put my tank upside down on a tall rack, and connected a hose. The other end of the hose led to a 100-pound tank, already sitting on the ground near the rack. When he opened both valves, all the propane (liquid) in my 20-pound tank drained into that big one. I imagine that they resell the scavenged propane.

Sometimes it's captured.

When we moved down to the LA area years ago, the moving company wouldn't take any propane tanks we had unless they were empty. So I took them to a big propane supplier, and he took them "out back" where he opened the valve up and "let er rip" -- right out into the atmosphere. I was a bit surprised. Unlikely that would be allowed now I would think, or at least in California!

Oh I know it was captured. Just kinda sad they sell your own propane back to you.

I know this thread is a year old, but it's the most recent with this topic. I just learned a bit about the horizontal tanks so I'm adding some info to this so it can be found in a search.

I have a 2009 2720SD with the two horizontal tanks. The exact same tanks on the TM can be purchased from Manchester. They are sold through multiple places. It's more expensive through Amazon, although they can be found there too. This is called the Manchester 20 pound (5 gallon) horizontal tank with gauge. This is an exact replacement of the original TM equipment - no modification needed.

Initially I couldn't find a place in or near Denver that would replace a leaky valve or recertify the tank after it was 10 years old, so I ended up buying 2 new tanks by having them shipped to me. Then I learned that new tanks are supposed to be "purged" of air on the very first time they are filled. I went to a couple U-Haul places that were clueless about what that meant. They said they couldn't purge new tanks. They are a great place to get refills but only starting with the 2nd time a new tank is filled.

Eventually I ran across a great resource called AAA Propane in western Denver (actually in Wheat Ridge) at about 44th and Wadsworth that is highly regarded by other propane users. They can repair and recertify the original tanks at that location. They also purge new tanks. I heard they typically replace the valves as part of a recertification process and whatever propane you had in there (if they are not empty) they will put back in the recertified tank and only charge you for what was added on the refill.

Since I had a bit of a learning curve with this whole thing, I'm posting this info for reference to help others.

I'm glad you resurrected this one Jeff, I just bought a 2001 TM & now I have options for replacing or re-valving my tanks.
Thanks!

For what it's worth, new horizontal tanks can be purchased here for around $200 each.

Thanks, I suspect mine will need to be replaced as it appears it was never re-certified at they are nearly 19 years old. It is good to know that replacements are available.

I just went to get mine filled and they told me that I have to get them recertified. I called all over San Diego and couldn't find anyone that would recertify tanks anymore.

Default Why the price disparity?

Seems odd that these prices vary so much for apparently the same product. It doesn't appear to be location.
