Default Campgrounds near Death Valley

Does anyone know of a good campground to recommend in the Death Valley area?

We are heading there this week.

Thanks,

Tom

we just spent a week at Furnace Creek CG the main NPS campground. It was great, but no hookups. Just fresh water and dumpstation Are you set for dry camping?

This is kind of an interesting website, gives a lot of info about Death Valley:

http://www.deathvalley.com/dvtalk/dvtalk.shtml

We really enjoyed Scotty's Castle, very interesting. The hike to Natural Bridge was also nice. We didn't have time to explore on foot much, but there is a lot to see there. We also wanted to see Darwin Falls, but never had time. The visitor's center has a lot of information that you may find useful.

Panamint Springs Resort also has hookups, of a sort (I believe they run a generator for their power) http://deathvalley.com/psr/ but it's not right in the middle of the park like Furnace Creek is. They have the only satellite pay phone I've ever seen.

You might want to look into the private campground at the Furnace Creek Ranch if you want hook-ups. The park "campground" at Furnace Creek is called Sunset and this is what it looks like:

They have flush toilets and water available at each toilet building but there are no hook-ups, no fire rings and no picnic tables. I was just there last month. The campground at Stove Pipe Wells is the same.

Hi there,

Thank you to all who replied. We ended up staying in a brand new rv park in Beatty, Nevada.

The place is called "Death Valley RV Park" and is advertised by huge signs as a "Brand New RV Park" as you drive in.

All facilities were very nice. Cost was $27 per night with full hookups. Sites were sandy soil, but quite level. It got really cold at night, down in the 30's according to the manager. But with the electric hookup our trusty TM's heater kept us toasty warm.

We used Beatty as our homebase while touristing in the Valley. Furnace Creek was absolutely jammed with people. That photo of the open spaces had rv's multiplied exponentially in it. We ate lunch there, and paid lots for so so food. IMHO it is a quintessential tourist trap.

DV Scotty's Castle was really interesting. The water generated electric plant was neat. We took both the house tour and the tunnel tour. The DW likes the desert and enjoyed it all. IMHO, deserts are obstacles to cross on the way to the mountains.

Stayed in Death Valley this weekend at the NPS Furnace Creek campground. We stayed in site 45 which I researched using google earth. I reserved it a week prior and we thought it was the best in the CG. Large site with a nice tree in the site. You can check out the site picture on recreation.gov.
Highly recommended and a great time. The other CG's were parking lots...
