I tow a 3124KB with a double cab Tacoma prerunner V6 (190hp) no problem but I will be installing a Toyota super charger, this will jack up the HP to 260 and give me high altitude performance in the mountains (I hope), but even without the SC I'm satisified with the TV.

Default A vote for the tundra

I pull my 2720 with a 2003 Tundra. Did a cross country in '05 and it did fine in the mountains of Colarado and across the continental divide. No problems with hills either up or down. It might cost more but the reliability is much better than the other trucks.

If you elect to get any truck, make sure that you get a factory installed tow package and a good brake controller.

Another vote for Tundra! Just pulled my SL over 2000 miles from MO to NM and back and averaged 14.3 mpg. Was hoping for 15, but am satisfied. Noticed that some western regular gas was 86 octane, which may have held the milage dowm somewhat?

We've got the '07 Tundra (5.7 L 4x4 long bed) and got a little better than 14 MPG between Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Atlanta. It gets a little hilly in spots which I thought was going to lower the MPG, but I think the down hill makes up for it.

The engine rarely goes over 2,000 RPM with our 2720SL

Default 03 Tundra

I've gotten as high as 22 MPG at 55 MPH on level road, between Raleigh and the coast, with my 2003 Toyota Tundra. On my cross country trip, with the trail manor in tow, the lowest milage noted was around 14. Generally I get about 17-19 around town, etc.

Our 4R tows fine even with the anemic 3.4l. But it is a truck built on stout components. It is incredibly well built and has traveled to some very extreme places in it's 110K miles. The new ones have stronger motors and brakes. I swear by Toyota.


Before putting a SC on that Taco, check out gadgetonline.com

This thread help me make up my mind to buy a Tacoma. I am going to buy one with the V6 and the trailer towing package and 4X4. We also live in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and can not only use the towing capacity but the 4X4. Our Son has a 2003 Tundra it is a nice size but the new Tundras are a big truck. We plan on buying a 2619 or 2729. Thanks for all of the good information.

Edited to add: I am finding that dealers are willing to reduce prices by as much as $3,000 below MSRP. Probably has something to do with auto sales sucking now!

I ended up with the Tundra with the 5.7 V8. It has a six speed auto tranny. It pulled the 2720 just great (as you would expect) as we drove up to Sequoia Nat'l Park (Sierras). What was really nice though, was using the transmission in the manual mode on down hills. Engine braking was effective and limited the need to use the brakes tremendously.

This Tundra is overkill for the 2720, for sure.

Well, my Tundra 4x4 supposedly will pull 10,100 pounds. The 2720SL is, I think, about 3500 pounds and I did pull it okay with a Jeep Liberty (5,000 pound tow capacity) except for in the Sierras. There I had the tranny light going on as I was overheating the transmission.

So, the Tundra gives me way plenty of tow capacity for the 2720SL. A vehicle with a 6500 pound tow capacity would be plenty, I would think. The Tacoma, for example, should do very well as many have already said in this thread. I sure have enjoyed towing with the Tundra though. Like the trailer was hardly there...
