Unexpected tire wear--anyone see this before?

Thanks for the education guys. I had not considered belt/tread separation before. When I inspect my tires, this is something that I had not been looking closely for. Doing some internet searching on the topic, it looks like most of these result in blowouts. I consider myself lucky that the tire held until I reached the campsite.
