Default Scale Weight '04 2720SL

I took our rig to the scales this morning and had it weighed. I thought others might find the results helpful.

Trailer '04 2720SL (fully loaded for camping, no water, full propane)
Trailer Axle = 3540#
Trailer Tongue = 470#
GVW = 4010#

Tow Vehicle
'06 Chevy Silverado 1500 extra cab, 8' bed (with camper shell) loaded for camping (less DW).

Steering Axle = 3000#
Drive Axle = 3740# (including TW....no WDH)........(GAWR 3686# ..... GVWR 6600# )

The TrailManor is maxed-out on the axle weight (no WDH for me)
Our 1/2 ton Chevy P/U is maxed-out on the rear axle (actually 54# over weight). I was carrying about 100# of firewood but I feel ~OK with being a little over on the truck axle. I have over-sized tires and Air-lifts. The really sad part is that we are 150# over our GVWR on the truck.

Keep in mind, there are just the 2 of us and we really don't carry a lot of stuff in the trailer (and it is maxed-out). We carry almost everything in the truck bed.

How many of you tow these things with a mini-van??????

have to get mine by for sure now, I knew we would pick up a minimum of 500# just by changing from the pop-up to the TM. Now if I can find out what axle is under '11 2720SL. The label on the axle is painted over. We went through this with the pop-up, loaded it was 2800#, axle 2640# and the tire wear indicated it was over loaded. No blow outs on our Alaska trip. 20k miles + but went through 4 new tires from the time we left until we got back.

I wish that I would have.......

I can't believe that we have more than 300# of personal stuff (pots, pans, dishes, silverware, bedding, rugs, toiletries, cleaning supplies, clothes, electric heater, lantern, fan, BBQ, charcoal.....then there's the solar panels (60#), extra battery weight (85#), lift-kit & bigger tires, 40# .

My best guess would be that the trailer weighed ~3500# when we towed it home empty.

Even though my axle is at it's rated weight limit, it still has a bit of an upward bow in it. I have tires that are rated @ 2540# (each) @ 65PSI, so I'm not real concerned about blow-outs. I will keep a close watch on the tread wear though.

I did talk to Dexter Axle the other day. They do make the 3500# axle with 6 lugs. I also found out that the 5200# axle will not work on the TM because the 12" drums are too wide and the torsion arms are too long. I have to take some measurements of the wheel well to see if the 4400# axle would fit but I doubt it.

Thanks for posting your scale numbers. It's the only way to know for sure where you stand.

I don't tow with a minivan, but some of them have payload capacities approaching those of standard pickups. 6 200# guys, as Ed pointed out, need the load capacity of a 3/4 ton truck.

These are my numbers: http://www.trailmanorowners.com/foru...ad.php?t=10652

My TM has a 5000# axle. That and a WDH would put you back within limits if you could get rid of the firewood and make that work.

Are you sure that you have a 5K# axle?

I have been on the phone with Dexter Axles and the tell me that there is no way that a 5K# axle will work on our trailer. Maybe the 3023 has bigger wheel wells.

I'm thinking about getting a 4400# axle. That would help me rest at ease. We are planning a trip to Alaska in the not to distant future. I want to be sure that the trailer is well suited for that trip.

I haven't crawled under there to look for a Dexter part number or label plate, but here's a picture of the sticker on the side of the trailer showing the GAWR as 5080#.

The TM specs for 2011 look like they are using the same axles as they did 6 years ago. Maybe Ed at the factory would tell you how hard it would be to put a 3023 axle on your trailer. If I can help you by doing any measuring, I'll be glad to try.

We had at least one report, several years ago, from someone who special-ordered his TM from the factory with a 5000 pound axle. I'll see if I can find it - or perhaps someone else will.

I appreciate that and ma contact you if I have any issues. I just have to take measurements and call Dexter back.

It may be that the 3023 has larger wheel wells than the 2720.

The guy at Dexter actually talked me out of the 5200# axle though. I'm now shooting for the 4400# axle. I'd really like to have the 12" brakes but the guy at Dexter said that if the axle is too far over-rated from the actual load, I may experience tire wear and more shock to the trailer.

He also said that if I have upward bow to the axle (that I have), I should be fine. I plan to put another 300# of load in the trailer (as an experiment) to see if that causes the axle to straighten out.
