Is there a "Recommended" 15 inch tire now

Hi,
I've read a lot of the posts on here but am unable to find if there is a recommended replacement for the stock Marathons.

Please point me to the right thread if it exists.

I have an 08 3124KB. The tires were 3 years old via the date code.
I just had the apparently common ordeal where the tread separated on my passenger side tire and ripped the bottom of the camper up. To make matters worse the spare's valve stem was cracked and deflated when we tried to put more air in it. Dohhhh!

So, I've learned from reading a few posts that I need to get metal stems, put on tire guards, and build a cage for the plumbing. What I couldn't tell was whether there was a tire that was recommended over the others or is the issue not tire related but that for a single axle, our campers are on the edge of any tires load rating?

I apologize for probably a redundant question but my little mind couldn't assimilate all of the different threads into one thought.

For my 3124 I looked specifically for a D load range tire. That has a rating of about 2680 (I think) lbs each and my TM weighs in at about 4240 lbs. So plenty of margin.

I just put new tires on this spring and I went with Maxxis 8008. They seem to be well regarded tires and I could get them at my local Discount Tire - although they had to order them. $119 each I think - but with mounting, balance, steel valve stems, and tax it came to just over $300.

No, there is still no conclusion emerging from the Great Tire Experiment, largely because there are too few users of too many types of tires. As they just posted, Al-n-Sue had good luck with Maxxis. I have had no problems whatever with 15" Marathons. I think the biggest difference is simply the move to 15" tires, and the much higher load rating that they bring.

I have had no problems with my 15" Marathon upgrade...

I have the Maxxis and will leave tomorrow on a 3000 mile trip to test them! Can't wait.

I haven't seen any posts of any "blow outs" with any of the 15" tires, no matter what brand.

Can the older TM adapt to 15" tires? Mines a 1996 model with the "square" wheel housing.

The original poster has a 3124 which is listed in the brochures as having 15 inch tires.

But his didn't blow out. He is just looking to replace them. I'm sure somewhere there have been 15" problems, but they seem to be much less frequent than with a 14" tire. If I am not mistaken -and I know I will be corrected if wrong :-) - most of TM's entire line now has 15" tires. That tells me something.

This is the problem that TMOs have been having with 14" tires.

I don't know that I've seen this specifically noted anywhere, but it seems to me that the load rating of the 14" Marathon's was just marginal for a 2720. Could that explain the seemingly large number of blowouts on that model/tire size? If you load up a 2720 (or even a 2619) it could put the total weight over the limit. And even a properly inflated tire at reasonable speed would be subject to failure. And it might explain the relative lack of blowouts on 3023 and 3124 models - which have a D rated 15" tire from the factory?

I don't have the figures handy here, but I know that the D load range for a 15" tire is >2600 lbs - which puts the total way over 5000 lbs for the trailer. You'd have to load up a 3124 pretty heavy to reach that. (My 3124 is 4240 lbs with close to camping ready status).

Just a thought. Other may have differing opinions.
