My 2-30 should, obviously, been 2-3.

My daughter's Miata that I was referring to is a 96 0r 97. It only has an idiot light, so you really do not know how hot it is.

My brother has a similar problem. He has dad's 53 Willys CJ3B Jeep (high hood). At least he has a temperature gauge, but no smog equipment.

Neither of these are what anyone would call a modern vehicle.

I normally try to keep my cars and trucks for 20 years. So for me, at this time the border between a modern car and an old car is 1990.

The '53 Willys wouldn't be built with the precision and material that would require the higher running temps. The Miata is a different story.

Most vehicles starting in the late 70's - early 80's were designed to run @ > 195*. Early on, there were high temp related issues, especially with head gaskets etc. Over time, 225* is well tolerated without issue and 280* is seldom a problem, although, I would not want to test that on my car.

I remember the first time I bought a car after 1985, when California required the catalytic converters.

A friend of mine told me to NOT put a temperature gauge on it because it would scare me.

Apparently engines with a cat converter versus the previous years model without the cat converter have different operating temperatures.

These days, nearly everything has a cat converter, including my motorcycle.
