Thought I would let everybody know how our claim was resolved by Progressive. We had replacement/purchase price coverage. The trailer was finally towed to the dealer where we bought it here in Montgomery. They put it on the back of their lot and barely looked at it. After it sat there for about 2 weeks I dropped by and talked to the service manager, who said he was sure it would be totaled, but he hadn't really had time to work up an estimate but would try to pull something together by the end of that week. Two weeks later talked to the claims representative who said he still hadn't gotten anything from the dealer's service department. He went ahead and sent me a check for the tow package I had had installed on the TM (I had a receipt for it) as a part of the "contents" coverage. (I had previously gone to the tow company site and at their advice removed all our belongings from the inside of the trailer. Nothing inside was damaged, but the shells didn't meet correctly along the roof and I'm pretty sure everything inside ended up getting wet during the torrential rains that came right after that).
After two more weeks Progressive claims representative called again and said he had contacted the factory and asked for a parts list and estimate of hours needed to repair the damage. He finally was able to get this from them and worked up his own estimate of repairs. At that time a decision was made to declare it a total loss. A couple of days ago he brought me a check for the purchase price. (I was given the choice of that or a full replacement of the trailer. I had already decided that I don't want to tow anything again --I do all the driving as my husband is not allowed to drive due to danger of seizures. The dealer service manager's lack of cooperation didn't exactly make me want to deal with them again. If I had ever needed repairs on the TM I bet he would have had the same attitude--he seemed much more worried about taking care of those half-million dollar motor homes he had in his shop, not my little TM.)
So even though it actually took 9 weeks from the time of the accident to get everything resolved, I was satisfied with their treatment of me as I don't think it was really the insurance company's fault that it took so long to get an estimate prepared.
Thanks to everyone for your kind words and advice on this and many other topics. I was totally new to towing and RVing and everything I read here was very useful. This is a great group--both knowledgeable and fun.
I think we are going to go with a camper van from here--nothing to tow and I have some experience driving one. It won't be as roomy as the TM but should work okay just for the two of us. I have a Draw-Tite Intella-Stop Ultra electronic trailer brake controller (similar to the Prodigy) if anyone is interested, I'll sell it for $75.00 (I paid $185 for it). Of course, I only have the unit that goes in the car and the mounting bracket --not the part that goes on the trailer. Here is a link
