Default On-Line Tire Dealer

I am in the process of upgrading to 15" wheels and have decided on Maxxis tires based on comments here. The best price I can find is a company called 4 Wheel Online, at $143 per tire. Has anyone had any experience with this company? Is there one you would recommend? I live in Maine so local dealers are kind of scarce. Thanks in advance for any help.

Default tires

I paid $95.00 each for my Maxis 225/75R15, plus tax and bal. or $216. out the door. That was from a local dealer in my community. Don't know anything about the on-line dealer. Seems abit high for on line dealers...jim

I would try a local dealer ( not chain) and ask them if they can price and install what you want. Also don't forget to get metal valve stems.

I got three ST225/75R-15D1 113 B Maxxis tires in March 2011 from
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/home.do

Cost was $324. including UPS shipping for the three tires.

Their customer service via email was good. At the time of my order, they could not get "E" range tires from Maxxis so I got the "D" range. Can't remember what that means now...I think it means I got 8 ply instead of 10 ply tires.

I also got an answer about the age of the tires I'd be getting. Excerpt from their customer service email reply (it came with a name of the agent and a phone number also):

"Our policy if to not sell tires as "new" if the D.O.T. numbers are older than 3 years old, the government standard is 4 years. Our warehouses are climate controlled, and kept clean enough to eat off the floor. That being said, I would be surprised if these tires were any older than 18 months. If you get them, and they are older than you wish, let me know and I will send replacements. We are on a "burn and earn" refill. When we sell a tire, we replace a tire, to ensure the freshest stock."

The tires were about 15 months from their mfr. date as I recall. I got them mounted/balanced/steel stems at a local service station and put them on the TM myself (with help/tips from this board). I live in a rural area so this was best option vs. hauling the TM 60 miles away to get the work done at a place that sells trailer tires.

I just upgraded to 15" wheels earlier this month and bought Maxxis 8008 225 75R15's locally (Tire Pro's) for $138/tire (price includes mounting, metal stems, balancing and tax/disposal fees).

Also had to buy rims and modify my spare tire carrier (which was already too tight on the original 14" rims).

I had them check the DOT dates with their distributer and told them I did not want anything more than 4 months old...the tires they installed were about 3 months old.

Considering most recommend replacing trailer tires every 3-4 years (based on tire age, not install date...since the tires start rotting the day they are created regardless of use), if buying "new" trailer tires with a 15 month old DOT date I would expect a BIG discount (if I considered them at all).

My dealer will re-balance the tires for free. So I like to every year when I re-adjust the brakes and re-pack the bearings take the tires in for re-balancing.

Art, that's interesting. Have you found them to be out of balance without having lost a balancing weight? I asked my tire guy if I ever need to bring mine back and he told me that if they were spun balanced properly they shouldn't change unless a weight is lost.

Yes, The very first time after mounting them, maybe 5K miles, is the worst out of balance. After that it just slightly out of balance, slight movement and weight change. But as you wear the tire with normal wear, it less each time. Only a few times have I had it where one of the tires was in balance.

I think is has to do with the new tires getting worn smooth and the weight of the rubber that is lost. A few times the weight is moved quite a distance form the original location and much change in the weight. One time I had a large weight removed and required no weights at all.

I have had my tire guy for 25+ years rotate and spin balance my tires on all my cars every 7K. They are almost always out of balance. I get exceptional wear out of my tires. Current TV tires has about 50K on them and i'm at about 65% of the tread.

I have played with the idea of rotating the camper tires, but keep thinking that changing the rotation on ST tires might not be good.?

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to get mine checked before my big trip this summer.
