Default remote Suburban water heater switch

I have a Suburban SW6DE hot water heater. The switch that turns on the electric element is located under the gas valve on the outside of the TrailManor. I forgot to turn it off once and burned up the electric element (I am certain no one has ever made this mistake but me). I purchased, from Suburban, a switch and light, similar to the one for the gas under the sink. I was wondering if anyone else has ever had the thought to install the electric switch next to the switch for the gas. Before I cut up the panel near the sink I thought someone might have some insight on how I might bypass the switch on the tank (under the outside cover) and wire a switch under the sink with a light which tells me when it is on so that I don't burn up the element again. Does anyone have any insight?

I added the switch with light to the under sink panel! It is wired into the box on the side of the HW heater in the cabinet under the sink! Its cramped under there but doable. I think the outside switch is in the on position and I turn it on and off from inside! I bought my switch from Lowe's! It has a nice large red light so it can't be confused! After 3 heating elements, It was time we wised up! LOL!

Earl,

I'm working on installing a red indicator light next to the gas switch in front of the sink to indicated that my water heater's exterior switch for the electric element is turned on.

Your lighted switch probably had a third terminal going to ground so the light would illuminate when the switch was turned on. What did you ground your switch to?

Rather than grounding, that third terminal should go to the neutral (white) wire.
