2013 Nissan Frontier

We bought the Frontier with the 2.5L 4cyl. It has oil and transmission cooler and a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs., certainly more than adequate for a 2417KS. Opinions?

JWooddell, welcome to our forum. With a 4 banger that only has 150 HP, as long as your not planning on towing your rig into the mountains and stay on fairly flat roadways, you'll be fine. With a towing capacity of 3,500, be sure to get a weight distributing hitch and pack light. The 2417ks weighs 2250 dry. Once you load your gear and supplies in the trailer and your truck and add two or three passengers, you will be well over 3000 lbs.,but if you're careful not to overload your rig,you'll be fine.

Since you have already bought the truck, it may be a bit late to ask for advice. But let me mention a couple things.

Does it have an automatic transmission? An automatic transmission always has a transmission cooler. For towing, the question is, does the truck have a second (or Auxiliary) transmission cooler? If it has a manual transmission, presumably the transmission cooler you mention will do the job. However, I note that the options for the vehicle do not seem to include a towing package, which is where an added transmission cooler normally shows up.

The payload is about 950 pounds. For almost every vehicle, including Nissan, the term Payload refers to the weight of everything you put in or on the truck except the driver. This means the passengers, everything you put in the bed, and the trailer hitch weight.The hitch weight of a loaded 2417 will likely be around 400 pounds, so you have around 550 pounds left for passengers and "stuff". As Cruiser said, pack light.

I think the vehicle is body-on-frame, rather than unibody (a good thinng, in my opinion). Did the truck come with a trailer hitch that is attached to the frame (not the bumper)? If the answer is no, you will have to add one - the bumper hitch will not do the job. If yes, is it a Class II hitch (1-1/4" square opening) or a Class III hitch (2" square opening)? You need a weight distriution hitch, as Cruiser mentioned, which in turn requires a Class III hitch.

Did the truck come with a seven-way receptacle to make the electrical connection to the trailer? If not, you will have to add one, and add the wiring up to the engine compartment. Not a big deal, but a four-way or five-way receptacle does not have a trailer brake connection, which you must have.
