trailbiker - I've had blowouts on both Marathons and Kumhos, and then switched to 15" wheels. You can read all about it here:

http://www.trailmanorowners.com/foru...ad.php?t=10265

If I had to do it over again, I would have skipped the Kumhos and gone directly to the 15"-ers.

Trailbiker -

The answer to the lift kit question, and the question "can I upgrade to 15-inch tires without a big hassle?" has been covered a number of times here. You need to Search the Tires forum for posts about the Dexter Axle 3 inch rule. I know they are there - I just don't have a link at the moment. For a 2006 2720SL (which I have), the answer is almost certainly "no problem", and it was not a problem for me.

Thanks Bill,

I'll look for the the the posts. If I can upgrade to 15" wheels without the lift kit I will. I don't really see any downside to doing that. I have to replace my tires either way.

Thanks for you input. I read your post. I want to avoid buying new tires twice so it seem like 15" wheels are the way to go. I will try to get Maxxis tires if i can.

When getting the new tires, I would have metal valve stems installed - they aren't that much extra, should last longer and minimize another point of failure.

I believe a lot of tire failures were actually caused by faulty rubber valve stems from China (there was a BIG recall a few years ago).

Also, be sure the shop balances the tires. My tires were not balanced by the factory. I had them balanced by the shop that installed my metal stems - the toilet paper in the bathroom has stayed on the roll since then

I'll add another thumbs up for my14" Kuhmos. I put them on early in 2008. Since then we done two round trips to the west coast and probably have a total of close to 30,000 miles with no problems. I try to keep my max speed at 65 mph and we don't do much travel on non-hard surface roads. I certainly don't do anything special to protect them. They sit out year round in my back yard.

All that said, I may well consider upgrading to 15" Kuhmos in another year or two.

Default Kumho tires

Put new 195/14 D rateds on '05 2619( purchased 7/2011) in Sept 2011.
So far one 1100 mile trip, mostly at 60-65 mph hiway speeds, no problems. No back country roads.
I also put in steel stems and Truck System Technologies TM-510 RV tire monitoring system.

Unfortunately, Kumho Radial 857's (their trailer tire) are only made in a 14" rim size. I wish they made 15"ers. So if you move to 15" wheels, you'll need to choose a new brand.

Arniland,

Remember what a prospectus for stocks always says: Past performance is not a guarantee of future earnings. Trouble free experience with tires means that you have not overstressed them in the past. It does not indicate how long that trouble free period will last.

When my current tires, (July 2010), are three years old. I am going to replace them with new ones. BTW, mine are Goodyear Marathons.
