A Class III hitch is more than capable of handling that tongue weight, as long as you use a Weight Distribution Hitch. For instance mine is labeled for only 550 pounds direct couple and 1500 with a WDH. Look at the label or stamped information on the hitch, it will tell you both tongue weights and gross pulling weigts, you just have to get under the hitch to read them.

I wound up with a Dodge Durango, 3.6L 290HP, w/6200# tow rating w/WD hitch, 8 speed selectable trans. and AWD. Rides better than the Explorer and just "feels" more substantial. Plus the Ford dealer wouldn't deal. This was ~2K less money. Has the tow package and the sales guy spoke "tow" whereas the Ford guy didn't.
Took my daughters family to the airport this AM at 0dark thirty and everyone (7 total + luggage) fit fine and were comfortable for the hour and a quarter ride.
