Default Need help with identifying correct Maxxis tires

I'm going to go ahead and replace my trailer tires sometime in the next month and I decided (based on a lot of feedback on this forum) to go with Maxxis tires. What I'm unsure about is which ones to get-- 205/75R15 come in 6ply or 8ply and then there's 22575R15 that comes in 8ply. I don't understand the difference between the 205 and 225. Can someone provide some guidance? Thx.

When I was looking at tires for USA made tires it showed Maxxis as now coming from Tiawan ?? Now for the question, The contact patch (a tire's "footprint") is relative to the width of the tires, and being that the width is 225 vs. 205, you have gained 20 mm in width.

and then multiply by the aspect ratio to get the height difference: 225x75x15 vs a 205x75x15 will be 20mm x .75 = 15mm or 5/8" taller

Now if going from a 14 to a 15 then add another inch: 1.625"

Since the major concern is the change in clearance between the top of the tire and the wheel well, it is half the change in diameter: .8125" or about 7/8" less.

Does that help ?

Thx for the feedback. I'm guessing since the Marathons that came with the TM have 225 on them, I should probably stay with that size.

Rottiemon , it's actually better to go with the 225/75R15s because of the increased load rating for your TM:

Amazon has them, among other places:

A 2013 should have the lift kit from the factory so should be no problem. Do have to wonder why they didn't just clock the axle differently (available). That would have increased the ground clearance on the axle as well. The lift kit does not.

Clock the axle? I hadn't heard that term, but it describes exactly what you mean. In point of fact, TM did begin to clock the axle differently. I don't know exactly when, but it was in the 2008-2010 time frame. My 2006 has a factory-installed lift kit, meaning the square tube bolted between the axle and the frame. Starting at about that time, all TMs were built with a lift kit for a while, because it seemed that almost everyone wanted one. And shortly after that, TM got rid of the separate lift kit, and began using a different axle with a higher initial angle. As you suggested, this saved weight, parts cost, and assembly labor on each TM. ISTR that the change wasn't sudden, but was phased in. This is what makes it so difficult to answer the common question "Does my TM have or need a lift kit"? The only real way to know is to measure the height of the frame above ground.

Perhaps the change to the new axle happened at the same time that TM went to 15 inch tires all around? Though I don't recall for sure, it would make sense.

I believe mine are clocked at 22.5 degrees down. Looked into replacing with a 5,000 lb clocked 45 degrees down. Was about $700.

Just got off the phone with a local tire shop that carries Maxxis and the 225/75R15 8 ply will cost me $119 per tire (that installed and balanced). So, I'm pretty happy with that. Now, if some of the snow out here would melt, I could get the TM out and take it in town for the tires.

That sounds like an excellent price for the Maxxis tires, RottieMom.
Was that at Discount Tires?
